Attracting foreign students back to their home
countries can be difficult, but an international em
ployment service is available to help college-educated
students locate suitable jobs in their own countries
"There's nothing to lure them back and get them
active in their society," says Peter Briggs, advisor in
the International Services Office
Foreign students, after being somewhat "Amer
icanized," need to feel their new learning will be
relevant and that they will not be "out of it" upon their
return, he says
A survey taken by the National Association for
Foreign Student Affairs (NAFSA) confirms Briggs'
observations: many foreign students have a hard time
finding jobs that use their new skills once they return
to their home countries
To alleviate this problem, NAFSA funded the
Home Country Employment Registry in 1974 and has
recently requested that all foreign student offices
publicize its service
The registry's aim is to match foreign students
with multinational corporations that are recruiting
employees to go overseas The service is free and
open to junior, senior and graduate foreign students
Those registering are filed in the registry’s com
puter according to their nationality, field of study,
degree earned or expected, and date of availability
The records are made available only to those com
panies the association terms "bona fide employers
who can list a specific position or vacancy "
Since the registry started, about 16,000 students
from 116 countries have registered, some 150 from
the University. All fields are represented, but the bias
is toward business, math and engineeering, according
to the registry. More than 400 employers have used
the service, with Proctor & Gamble one of the largest
