49ers’ fleet receiver
sprains knee in practice
PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — Freddie Solomon, the San
Francisco 49ers' starting wide receiver and punt re
turner, suffered a sprained left knee in practice Thurs
day, but a team spokesman said Solomon likely would
play in the Super Bowl game against the Cincinnati
Bengals
Solomon, who had 59 receptions for 969 yards and
a team-high eight touchdowns in 1981, collided with
rookie cornerback Ronnie Lott during a passing drill
and crumpled to the Silverdome's artificial turf He was
helped into the locker room, where the diagnosis of a
knee sprain was made
Solomon officially was listed as questionable for
Sunday s game, and Jerry Walker, a 49ers' spokesman,
said it was a 50-50 chance he would play
“If the game was tonight, he would not play,"
Walker said But, when asked if the wide receiver would
be OK by gametime Sunday, the spokesman replied:
“This is the Super Bowl He'll play. "
Solomon was later spotted walking without a limp
and told several reporters on an elevator, "I feel fine "
Randy Cross, one of the 49ers' starting guards,
said that after the collision, Solomon had stayed on the
turf for “a couple of seconds but then bounced right
back up, and he looked like he was OK “
Only Dwight Clark, with 85 catches for 1,105 yards,
topped Solomon among San Francisco receivers
If Solomon cannot start against the Bengals Sun
day, Mike Shumann or Mike Wilson will take his place at
wide receiver If Solomon is unable to return punts, that
job will go to running back Bill Ring
Lott, the 49ers’ No.1 draft choice out of Southern
California, was uninjured in the collision with Solomon
The development came after Cincinnati Coach
Forrest Gregg had criticized his counterpart with the
49ers, Bill Walsh, for saying that running back Pete
Johnson will probably be the Bcngals’ primary weapon
Sunday
"We've got to put in two or three things to stop Pete
Johnson," Walsh said at Thursday's 49ers news con
ference "He ran effectively in the first game (gaining 86
yards on 12 carries in the Bengals' 21-3 loss), and
there s some thought that Cincinnati might use him
more."
Cincinnati's Williams
says revenge a factor
TROY, Mich. (AP) — Cincinnati Bengals linebacker
Reggie Williams says there’s a desire for revenge
smoldering beneath the kind words being traded before
Super Bowl XVI
Williams, a leader of the Bengals’ defense, said he’s
still upset at the way San Francisco quarterback Joe
Montana spiked a football in the end zone after scoring
a touchdown in the 49ers’ regular-season victory over
Cincinnati in Riverfront Stadium
Williams said he'll have revenge in mind when the two
clubs play Sunday in the Silverdome in Pontiac, Mich.
’’I can't speak for everybody, but I can recall vividly
seeing Joe Montana spike the football in the end zone,’’
Williams said Thursday.
‘‘I don't mind a quarterback being happy that he
scored a touchdown. But when he spikes a football in
our face, so to speak, I'm going to remember that,”
Williams said ‘‘I think I’ve been working on spiking
quarterbacks this week.”
The two teams have said few discouraging words
about each other during group interviews this week with
hundreds of reporters covering the Super Bowl Wil
liams indicated Thursday that it was time to put the
niceties aside.
“I'm fired up for this game,’’ Williams said
“Diplomacy has-been played to the hilt on the part of
several people in the organization.
"... There is a certain respectful communication
going between both ballclubs. They are saying great
things about us, and we re saying great things about
them "
