Surprise teams face Oregon
Patient Cougars, opportune Huskies
visit McArthur Court this weekend
By Donald Coulter
Ol ll>» EmtraU
Two of the Pacific 10 Conference’s early
season surprises — Washington State and
Washington — will visit the state of Oregon
this weekend.
And Oregon basketball coach Jim Haney
is glad they both travel to Corvallis before
visiting Mac Court.
"It’s definitely an advantage." Haney says
of the two teams playing 10th-ranked
Oregon State before they take on the
Ducks. “I don’t think playing the two
Oregon schools back-to-back is an easy
task."
Washington (6-0 in the conference) and
Washington State (5-1) have climbed to the
top of the league standings because of
patient offenses that commit few turnovers,
and defenses that keep the scoring low
Washington is allowing just 62 points per
game, while WSU is giving up an average of
53. In contrast. Oregon is both scoring and
allowing about 80 points
"We’re going to continue to play our
game,” Haney says of the fast break "Wa
shington and Washington State would
rather see the game played in the 50's We
want want it played in the 80’s.
“Washington State does a real good job
of keeping the tempo down, but Washing
ton will run if you give them the chance "
Washington starts four seniors, including
forward Dan Caldwell, who leads the Hus
kies in scoring (14.5) and rebounding (6 6)
Two other seniors who have keyed Wa
shington’s 13-2 start are center Kenny Lyles
r
(12.2 p.p.g.) and guard Steve Burks (12.3
PP9)
Washington State has already won more
confernece games than it did last year,
when the Cougars finished in the cellar with
a 3-15 record Their fast start this season is
due to the play of junior forwards Steve
Harriel (6-6) and Guy Williams (6-9) Wil
liams, a transfer from the University of San
Francisco, leads the Cougars in scoring
(12.6) and Harriel is second (9.9), although
he has averaged 14 points in six league
games
Oregon's leading scorer so far this sea
son is John Greig, who is averaging 17.4
points in conference games, ranking him
sixth in the Pac-10 Behind Greig is Jerome
Williams (12 9 p.p.g ). Both forwards are
averaging just over 7 rebounds
Haney says point guard Fred Cofield, who
has missed the Duck's last three games
because of a stress fracture in his right foot,
will not play Saturday night against WSU
"There's some chance he will play Mon
day (vs Washington),” Haney says of
Cofield, "but it will depend on what the
doctor says on Sunday.”
In addition, Haney doubts freshman Jerry
Adams will play in either game Adams
missed last Saturday's contest with Oregon
State, and has not practiced this week due
to a strained achilles tendon
"Jerry's in great pain,” Haney said
Thursday "Today he put on his tennis
shoes for the first time in a week He could
could hardly walk "
DUCK NOTES With Cofield in the lineup.
Jim Hanay
Oregon has a 7-3 record Without him, the
Ducks are 0-4 Oregon leads the Pac-10
in scoring (81 8), Free throw percentage
( 754) and rebounding margin (9 4)
‘Flashy’ Huskies to visit Ducks
By Steve Turcotte
O/Vw EnwnM
The University of Washington has a strange women’s bas
ketball team
Although the Huskies lead the Northwest League in scoring,
at 80 points per outing and rebounding at 50 a game, Washing
ton’s record is a mystery at 6-5
“Their record is really deceiving,” said Oregon women's
basketball coach Elwin Heiny, whose Ducks face the Huskies this
Saturday, 3:30 p.n at McArthur Court "They are really quite a
good team.
"They are probably the flashiest team we will play here this
season. They are a team that will beat us if we do not play well.”
Getting beat is something the 11th-ranked Ducks almost
experienced last Friday night when Oregon State came close,
losing to Oregon 63-60
The Huskies are a very different team from last season. They
have a new stock of freshman and junior college transfers to give
: their team a well-rounded look
* “Their new people have come at key positions for them," said
Heiny, whose Ducks are 11-2 on the season “They have fast
> guards who handle the ball well and their big people are good
* players, too."
Freshman guard Leteia Hughley and sophomore playmaker
Karen Murray lead the Huskies in scoring Murray leads the squad
in scoring, averaging 16.2 points per game while Hughley is
tossing in 15.3 points a contest Husky center Liz Chicane is
scoring 10a game Hughley (6.6) and Carlin McClary (6.4) lead the
team in the rebounding department
"Murray is probably their most consistent player scoring and
rebounding," Heiny said. "We ll have to watch her closely Last
year Washington was weak at guard They had to rely mainly on
their inside people They have those big people back along with
some freshman and junior college guards They are tough "
Oregon still is relying heavily on the scoring and rebounding
of All-American Bev Smith and center Alison Lang
Smith is scoring at 19.6 points per game and grabbing 12.2
rebounds Lang, meanwhile is scoring at a 18 6 clip per contest
and snaring 116 rebonds a game After those two, the scoring and
rebouding averages really drop Next in line in the scoring and
rebounding departments is Chris Metzger, who is injured with a
stress fracture, at 8 7 points and 5 4 boards
"I think the key to the game will be how we get the ball into our
inside people, ’’ Heiny indicated “Last year Alison Lang did not
have a very good game against Washington But if Alison stays out
of foul trouble I think we ll do well. That's kind of been the case all
year, if Alison's gets in foul trouble and has to sit on the bench, we
don't do all that well.”
With the absence of Metzger because of the stress fracture,
the Ducks will rely on sophomore Alison Bernhardt Bernhardt is
scoring 4.9 points a game in just 151 minutes
"Alison has been playing well lately, she probably will start for
us,” Heiny said
"But in order to win the game, we re all going to have to play
well We will have to get good performances from everybody,
because I think depth will probably be a factor If we get the good
performances, I think we ll win."
