Intramural sports at Oregon:
Playing for the fun of it

/ « s I ran down the field, signalling with
waving arms that I was open, I had hoped my
teammate would throw the trisbee to me
Instead he threw a short pass, but it sailed over
the head of the intended receiver, toward me
Reversing my tracks. I angled toward the frisbee It
was coming down quickly so my only chance for a
catch was to dive I stretched as far as I could, and
the trisbee seemed within my grasp
Suddenly I felt the crunch of a leg against my
face and then darkness — I had blacked out I later
found out that the collision had caused a broken
nose and a mild concussion that would put me out
of commission for two weeks
No I wasnt playing in the frisbee Super Bowl,
nor was it a game for the Oregon ultimate frisbee
side All the aches and pains I had earned had
come out of playing in a silly intramural game
As I sat back and recuperated the next few
weeks I wondered Why do hundreds of University
students each year put aside books and calculators
risk life and limb and play their hearts out — all in
the name of intramural sports7
