The Emerald Sports section’s new feature —
SPORTFOLIO — Is devoted to coverage of the
University’s many club sports, Intramurals,
and other events not otherwise covered by the
ODE. In addition, stories from the Associated
Press wire service will sometimes be Included
when space limitations preclude their use.
The section will appear regularly throughout
the remainder of the year. Anyone wishing to
have their sport or event mentioned In
SPORTFOLIO should call the ODE office
(686-5511) or leave a notice with the sports
staff.
Oregon’s co-ed ski team and the Central
Oregon Community College ski team will co
host the Tom Cranston Cup, January 22-23 at
Mt Bachelor
Besides the Ducks, 12 teams will compete
including Oregon State, Pacific Lutheran,
University of Washington, Washington State,
and College of Idaho, one of the region s best
squads
The teams will compete in both men's and
women’s alpine and cross country events
Slalom events will run on Friday, Jan. 22, while
the giant slalom and cross country events will
take place Saturday. Jan 23.
The event will be the only race hosted by the
Oregon skiers this year.
Ski team coach Bret MacPherson says that
gatekeepers are needed for the two-day affair.
He adds that Mt Bachelor usually provides
volunteers with free ski tickets for a couple of
hours work during the races
Those interested are to report to the race
department at Mt Bachelor before 10 a m on
race days.
The Duck skier* got off to a good start this
season with high finishes in races hosted by
the College of Idaho at Bogus Basin, Idaho
Oregon’s men finished second in the giant
slalom and slalom, while the women placed
fourth in the same events
Oregon Crew coach Lori Huseth has set new
goals for crew members who are in training for
the regatta season due to begin at the end of
March Huseth intends to choose a "best boat"
from among the light and heavyweight rowers
to compete in the regatta Crew members will
have one best boat each for men and women.
"I wanted to give those in training something
to strive for," Huseth says. "Not only does it
provide extra incentive for people to come out
and train, but it will also help to raise the
standard of Oregon rowing.
Huseth says everyone who trains will be able
to row in regattas.
During the month of January, crew members
are involved in our-of-the-boat training, which
involves running and weight training.
Huseth says all new rowers must come out
this week in order to be considered for the
regattas Huseth can be contacted through
club sports.
Crew members discussed traveling to Los
Angeles during spring break to train with USC
and UCLA Tuesday night
The Oregon women's soccer team members
participated in a border-to-border run last
weekend to raise money for the cost of their
trip to the national women's soccer champion
ship last term
Each of the 11 runners ran an average of 30
miles to raise $1500 of the $4800 to break even
Additional money-raising ventures might in
clude a raffle for a trip to Las Vegas
Oregon’s men's lacrosse squad will begin
practice Thursday, Jan 21. Anyone interested
in participating should be at Autzen Stadium at
3 p.m. Coach Spud Coulson says that no
experience is necessary, and invites new
comers to try out. Equipment will be provided,
except for sticks
The Ducks will play 11 regular season
games, plus participate in the Pacific North
west Lacrosse Tournament and a Jamboree.
Oregon first game will be at home against
Willamette University on Saturday. March 6.
Home games will be played on either the old
track and field facility behind Hayward Field, or
the field on 18th and Agate streets.
