Same old Civil War story
Beavers outpoise men
for 6th straight, 76-61
By Jett Dickerson
Ofn*£m*raW
Oregon freshman Scott Perry sank both
ends of a one-and-one situation at the tree
throw line to bring Oregon to within two of
Oregon State with six minutes to play Saturday
night
But the Beavers came back with 11 of the
next 14 points, and 13 of the last 21 scored, to
quench any hope the Ducks had of removing
OSU from the unbeaten ranks The 76-61 final
score was a poor indicator of the competitive
ness the Ducks brought to the always hard
fought Civil War game
Below the McArthur Court hardwoods,
Oregon coach Jim Haney cleared a throat
hoarse from trying to yell above the noise
created by 9,318 fans, and reflected on his
team's sixth straight loss to the Beavers
"Oregon State showed why they are a
good basketball team," Haney said "In the
second half, when the score was tight, they
were poised We did not have the emotional
stability (that OSU did) ”
The Ducks came out strong in the second
half to come within two of OSU at 52-50. but
Oregon gave the Beavers too many opportu
nities to put the game away It was only a
matter of time before turnovers and bad shots
gave Oregon State what it needed to defeat the
Ducks
"We broke down every time due to our
lack of emotional stability,'' Haney said
Whether it meant banging the ball too hard off
the backboard when going up for a shot being
too eager in shot selection, or getting whistled
for crucial technical fouls, Oregon was not as
poised as its upstate rival, Haney said
‘‘This (poise) is our last hurdle," he said
"When you're playing a tough team like
Oregon State, you have to match them phy
sically as well as emotionally — that was the
difference out there, the emotional
"Its not good enough just to compete,” he
said
On the other side of the coin, Haney said.
"We re definitely getting better." Freshmen
Perry (7 points) and Blair Rasmussen (10
points, 8 rebounds) were positive factors on
offense and guards Gary Gatewood and Paul
Bain did a credible job defending Oregon
State’s Lester Connor (15 points), the coach
said
The loss moved the Ducks to 2-3 in the
Pacific 10 conference, with Washington State
and the undefeated Washington Huskies due
to come to Mac Court this weekend

Second half comeback
lifts Duck women
over Beavers by 3
By Mike Rlpllnger
Of ttf Cimrakt
All that really matters is the final score
That is good news for the Oregon
women's basketball team, as that was about
the only time they led in the second half to take
a wild 63-60 win over a Oregon State team in
McArthur Court Friday night
The Ducks trailed OSU most of the night,
getting the lead only three times in the first half,
and were never able to hold it long The
Beavers played a tough pressure defense that
kept the Oregon guards tied up most of the
night and unable to take advantage of the
Ducks' superior inside power
When Oregon was able to get it inside.
Alison Lang took advantage of her quickness
over OSU center Jan Martin to score 26 points
and gather in 18 rebounds to lead the two
teams in both departments
OSU seemed to concentrate on Bev
Smith (Oregon s all-American forward) and left
me open, Lang said "Jan Martin was awfully
slow and we just passed around her until we
could get a good shot "
Lang was decisive inside, but foul trouble
kept her on the bench for much of the second
half Bev Smith was able to get loose long
enough in Lang's absense to keep Oregon in
the game as she threw in 11 second half points
to give her 19 for the night
It was definitely a tough game,” under
stated Oregon coach Elwin Heiny ‘ Both
teams payed well and we were just happy to
get the win , ”
Heiny was happy, but he was also lucky
Despite deficiency on defense, OSU's Martin
played well at the other end of the court to pour
in 25 for the Beavers
Oregon State played better team defense
than Oregon did in the first-ever live commer
cial television broadcast of a women's basket
ball game in Oregon
Fouls made the difference in the game.
Oregon State committed five fouls in the first
two minutes setting the tone for the rest of the
way as two starters fouled out and two others
were hampered with four personals
Both teams hit 26 field goals, but Oregon
was 11 for 18 from the free throw line, com
pared to the Beavers, who were only 8-for-12

kies, prior to the men's basketball game with

Undefeated Ducks
dump Oregon State
Oregon’s undefeated wrestling team kept its perfect season
intact with a 23-10 dual meet victory over Oregon State Saturday in
Corvallis.
Coming off a big 23-17 win over 10th-ranked San Jose State
Thursday night, the Duck matmen took it to the Beavers, winning
seven of the 10 matches en route to their 10th win of the season.
“I was, of course, very pleased with beating Oregon State,"
said Duck coach Ron Finley. "Any time we beat the Beavers it's
nice.”
Once again it was the middle weights where the Ducks showed
their strength, rolling off six straight wins to take command.
The Ducks continued to miss Mike Erb at 118 as Randy Ohta
dropped a 9-2 decision to OSU’s Mark Rodriguez to open the meet.
But Miles Hancock turned things around at 126 to start the win
streak with a tight 9-8 decision over OSU's Cliff Berger. From there,
it was almost all Ducks
Cliff Porter (134), Bill Nugent (142), Barry Boyles (150), Rick
O'Shea (158), and Paul Sheriff (167), all won decisions before the
Beavers rebounded to take two of the final three matches.
"I was especially pleased with Rick O’Shea who beat his
second All-American this year," Finley said of O'Shea s 7-6
decision over the Beavers' Brad Swartz
The final Duck victory was collected by Lance Hochanadel at
190 where he bested OSU's Gene Webb to the tune of 7-1
Gymnasts settle for split
The Oregon women's gymnastics team settled for a split in
Washington this weekend, winning a three-way meet with Seattle
Pacific and Montana State while losing a three-way meet with
Washington and Washington State
On Friday, the Ducks scored 127 80 points to best USP's
119 40 and MSU's 96 80. Sara Gustafson took firsts in the vault and
the all-around (32 15), while Maureen Nolan was first in the beam
(8 4) and Holly Holmes won on bars (8 75)
On Saturday, Oregon scored a season-high 132.05 points, but
it wasn't enough to offset UW's 135 35 and WSU's 132.75. UW’s
Suzie Sun took three firsts and won the all-around with a score of
35 70 Only Gustafson's winning 9 10 on the vault prevented Sun
from sweeping all four firsts

The Oregon coed swimming team was swept by a powerful
Washington Husky team 82-29 (men) and 72-33 (women) Saturday
afternoon, but later in the day the Oregon men's team came back to
trounce Idaho 69-40 at Leighton Pool.
Against Idaho, the Ducks had help from Mark Bernett (2:03.15 for
first place in the 200-yard individual medley), Erik Hughes (2:00.21
