coach. Ralph Miller, it was a team
effort on defense that keyed the
Beavers' two victories in the Bay
Area last weekend
“It was nice to put two strong
games back to back at this time of
the year, and especially on the
road,” Miller says "Against
Stanford we played as good of 40
minutes of defense as we have
played all year "
OSU won those two games
without the services of 6-11 start
ing center Greg Wittjer. who has
been out of lineup since spraining
an ankle against Idaho in late
December Miller says Wiltjer
probably won't start against the
Ducks, but will go instead with 6-8
sophomore Charlie Sitton (118)
in the post
On the Oregon injury list, Han
ey says starting point guard Fred
Cofield won't suit up for the game,
but forward David Brantley will
Cofield missed the trip to San
Francisco last weekend because
of a stress fracture in his right
foot, while Brantley sat out of the
Stanford game with a sprained
ankle
Senior Barry Walker will con
tinue to start in Cofield's place
Walker, who scored 15 points in
each of the two Duck losses last
weekend, is the igniting force
behind the Ducks' fast break
"With the fast break, we're sure
to have flurries where we turn the
ball over against Oregon State,
says Haney ‘‘We d just like to
limit those flurries to only a couple
of times in the game ”

Running off five consecutive
victories through the middle
weights, an inspired Oregon
wrestling team overtook
10th-ranked San Jose State in a
dual meet showdown Thursday
night at McArthur Court, down
ing the Spartans 24-18.
The meet was billed as a
tremendous matchup, as the
Ducks entered the match
ranked 11th in the nation and
looking to break into the top 10
The enthusiastic crowd that
showed up at Mac Court wasn't
disappointed
The win raised the Ducks to
9-0 in dual meet competition,
while the Spartans suffered their
first setback to go 9-1
The key match came at 177
where Duck freshman Charles
Nutter upset San Jose State's
highly touted Andy Tsamas 3-2,
giving the Ducks a 21-9 lead
with two matches to go

was toud throughout the match,
crescendoing into a roar as he
escaped Tsarnas’ grasp early in
the final round to take a 2-1 lead
Nutter was then awarded an
other point when Tsarnas was
called for stalling for the third
time in the match
As it turned out, Oregon
needed the match for the vic
tory
At 190 pounds, sophomore
sensation Lance Hochanadei
was anything but sensational in
drawing 4-4 with the Spartans
John Torrise, and at
heavyweight, Oregon's Dan
Cook was pinned at 1 07 of his
match with Casey Gulliford to
account for the final score
Senior Bill Nugent, making his
last appearance at Mac Court
for almost a month, posted
Oregon's first win, a 6-5 deci
sion over Spartan All-American
Eddie Baza at 142
Senior Barry Boyles poured it
on against Spartan freshman
Matt Olejnik 32-8 (at 150) to pull
the Ducks to within a point at the
break Sophomore Rick O'Shea
posted the Ducks' second
straight superior decision, a
17-5 thumping of San Jose's
Bart Ah You, to kick off the
second half
Junior Paul Sheriff kept the
streak alive with yet another
superior decision, this one a
15-3 win over the Spartans Clay
Davis at 167, to set the stage for
Nutter's heroics
