NATO ministers
discuss Poland
BRUSSELS, Belgium
The United States will press
its allies to issue “a clear con
demnation" ot Soviet policy
toward Poland and to decide
what to do if repression is not
lifted. Secretary of State Alex
ander Haig said Sunday
Haig arrived Sunday evening
for Monday s one-day meeting
of NATO foreign ministers He
said he hoped the discussions
would pave the way for Eu
ropean economic sanctions
against Warsaw and Moscow
The secretary said he would
caution America's NATO allies
against being tricked by ‘phony
moderation'1 into thinking re
pression in Poland is easing
The Reagan administration
has been concerned that its
European allies, especially
West Germany, appear not to
view the martial law crackdown
in Poland as seriously as Wa
shington does Haig said he
hoped those differences would
be reconciled at Monday's
meeting
Haig said there is danger of
further repression in Poland, as
well as direct intervention by the
Soviet Union
He said the United States
would ask the NATO foreign
ministers for "a clear condem

Polish fishermen
continue to defect
VANCOUVER, British Columbia
The Polish fishing vessel Pol
lux has left Victoria minus four
crew members, bringing to
about 90 the number of Polish
sailors who have jumped ship in
British Columbia since martial
law was imposed in Poland
But at seven Polish fishing
ships still docked in Vancouver,
even the suggestion of a sym
bolic strike appears to be fad
ing Wayne Fallis, a spokesman
for the fleet s agent here, said
Friday
He said a staff member of
Maritime Agencies Ltd boarded
one ship Thursday and found
rumors of a symbolic strike,
are not even heard of now The
suggestion of a strike is just not
part of the conversation "
Last week, 132 members of
the Polish Solidarity trade union
on board the Parma and
Regulus voted to hold a 'moral
strike” to protest martial law in
their homeland if they were or
dered back
Tadeusz Kawecki Poland's
Solidarity trade union represen
tative in Vancouver, said he was
sorry to hear about the four
defections from the Pollux
"Our position is stay on the
ship and hold the ships for the
workers and the people, not the
junta,' " he said adding that a
''moral strike" still will take
place if the fishing vessels are
ordered to return to Poland
Kawecki said crews on other
vessels that have arrived since
the strike vote was taken
probably are not aware of the
vote
