Cagers battle Cal, Cards
Oregon men to play in Bay area this weekend
By JEFF DICKERSON
Of ttw Emorald
Oregon's men's basketball team takes on
California tonight and Stanford Saturday, hoping
to maintain its undefeated Pacific 10 Conference
record in Northern California
The Ducks (2-0) face the two teams that battled
to a 87-78 victory for California at Stanford last
Saturday
Oregon is without the services of starting point
guard Fred Cofield and will be forced to start
senior Barry Walker at the other guard position
opposite junior Paul Bam
Walker has come on strong of late to help the
Ducks to their fast start and may have been
pushing for a starting role anyway
Oregon has a decided height advantage over
the Bears, who combine for a 6-toot-4 average
The Ducks average over 6-foot-6
Part of that advantage may be wiped away by
the Bears' 6-11 All-American candidate at center.
Mark McNamara
McNamara pumped in 30 points and grabbed
12 rebounds in Saturday's victory at Stanford, but
California coach Dick Kuchen says his center is
more important to the team than just scoring and
rebounds
"Mark's performance speaks for itself." Ku
chen says, "but I thought several of our other
players took a step up to a new level against
Stanford We realize that Mark is going to be
double and triple teamed that's where
(Michael) Chavez and (Sam) Potter have to bury
their (perimeter) shots ’’
Chavez delivered 18 points to the Bear cause
against Stanford, but Potter was more effective in
his defensive play
Wes Howell (6-3 senior forward) and Butch
Hays (6-3 sophomore guard) round out the start
ing five for the Bears Howell scored 14 against
Stanford and will be the Bears' swing man against
the Ducks tonight Hays scored 15 against the
Cardinals
Saturday's matchup with the Cardinals pits a
team with upward momentum (Oregon) against a
team with downward momentum (Stanford)
Since losing to Richmond Dec 19, the Ducks
have won four of their last five, while Stanford has
lost four of its last five
A major factor in the decline of the Cards has
been the loss of guard Keith Jones (academically
ineligible) and forward Hans Wichary (foot stress
fracture) — both were starters last year
"Losing Jones, Wichary and Terry Smith (back
injury prior to season) has changed our thinking
and our approach to strategies for the Pac-10
season,” Stanford coach Dick DiBiaso says
Without Jones and Wichary, the Cardinals have
been force to depend more heavily on last year s
Pac-10 Rookie of the Year, 6-8 center John
Revelli, and 6-7 forward Brian Welch
Against California, Revelli scored a career-high
27 points on 13 of 19 from the field Welch sank 10
of 16 from the field for 20 points against the Bears
In that game, the Cards led 48-41 early in the
second half before California went on a 24-8 tear
in a nine-minute span
DUCK NOTES — The biggest advantage for the
Ducks going into the weekend's games should be
their depth — Oregon had seven players in double
figures against Arizona, and coach Jim Haney
continues to play more people than his oppon
ents The Ducks return to action at McArthur
Court Saturday, Jan 16 against Oregon State
