Slapped by NCAA
By JEFF DICKERSON

Penalties imposed on University athletic
teams by the National Collegiate Athletic As
sociation Committee on Infractions in December
were leveled most heavily on the football team,
but the sanctions seem to be minor compared to
what some doomsayers around the Pac-10 had
been forecasting
The Oregon football team will not be eligible
to play in any bowl games next season, nor will it
be allowed to appear in any televised games
authorized by the NCAA Other sanctions against
the football team include a reduction to 25 of the
number of initial scholarships awarded to players
in 1982-83 and 28 scholarships in 1983-84 The
University is also placed on a two-year probation
The elimination of the football team's
chances of appearing on television next year
means the possible loss of hundreds of thousands
of dollars should the Ducks field an attractive
football team The loss of possible television
revenues appears to have disappointed Universi
ty administrators the most
“In my view, the penalty is severe'' says
University Athletic Director Rick Bay, adding that
he is distressed over the loss of possible television
money
It's to television revenues that you look for
release from financial worries," explains Ray
Hawk, vice president for administration and
finance.
While University officials were hoping the
NCAA sanctions would have some of the sting
taken out of them because of earlier penalties
imposed by the Pac-10 and action taken by the
University, rumors around the league had the
Ducks facing even tougher sanctions than the
Ducks have received
Stronger penalties could have been levied
against the football team, and the basketball team
emerged from the ordeal almost unscathed The
only penalty assessed the cagers (beside proba
tion) was the reduction to 14 of the number of
scholarships for next season College teams are
currently allowed 15 scholarships
For the most part, University officials seemed
pleased to have an end to the whole affair
"We are relieved to finally have it behind us,"
Bay said when the sanctions were announced last
month
