more tax
Starting today, smokers
will have to pay more to
light up.
The 1981 Oregon State
Legislature passed a seven
cent increase in the price of
a pack of cigarettes as part
of a program to balance the
budget.
The increase, the first
since 1972, raises the tax
from nine to 16 cents.
Presently, seven-ninths of
cigarette tax revenues go
into the state General Fund,
with cities and counties
dividing the remainder.
Revenue generated by the
tax increase will go to the
state General Fund.
The state department of
revenue, which collects the
tax, will sell tax stamps at
the higher rate to cigarette
distributors. Each cigarette
pack must bear the new
stamp.
Revenue department
officials will check for
compliance with the new
law as they visit retailers
around the state.
