Duck women blitz Seattle
Alison Lang dominated the scoring and
rebounding departments Friday as the Oregon
women's basketball team drubbed the Seattle
Sea Baskets 68-53 in a non-counting game at
McArthur Court before a crowd of 1,000
The Ducks jumped out to an early 13-2 advan
tage, with their full-court press throttling every
Sea Basket scoring attempt The Ducks' defense
kept the potent Seattle offense under wraps for
the most part
Oregon lost its intensity midway through the
first half, but the Sea Baskets were unable to pull
any closer than five points A pair of fastbreak
lay-ins by freshman guard Lisa Vetter, on long
passes from senior All-American Bev Smith, sent
the Ducks to the locker room sporting a 33-21
bulge
As in the first half, the Ducks jumped on the
Seattle Amateur Athletic Union club early in the
second half, outscoring their opponents 10-2 in
the first 2 13 of the second half But again, the
Ducks failed to keep their intensity throughout
much of the second half A pair of Penny Gienger
lay-ins with 9:31 remaining put the Ducks up by
20, 57-37, and the lead seemed insurmountable
In the Ducks' first game against the Cuban
national club, they showed patience and poise In
this game, they showed the same, except in spots
where they tended to hurry shots
Smith and freshman Chris Metzger were also in
double figures for Oregon Smith had 17 points on
8-for-14 shooting from the field while Metzger had
10 points on f-for-11 from the floor Smith also had
12 rebounds, five assists and 10 steals Metzger,
coming off an injured ankle suffered in the Cuba
game shot well despite rushing a couple of shots
For the Sea Baskets, Margaret Nielson was the
high scorer, hitting on 5-of-17 from the floor and
4-of-8 from the free throw line for 14 points Janet
Kusler also was in double figures for the Seattle
club with 11 Nielson was high rebounder for
Seattle and for the game with 15
The Ducks easily outshot the Seattle AAU team,
hitting on 29-of-62 from the floor ( 468), while
Seattle could manage to connect on only 22-of-69
(.329)

‘ This is a young team which
has a lack of playing in pressure
situations and it showed in
the way we played tonight "
For the night, Magee finished
with 29 points, which is not all
that unusual when you consider
he averaged 27 5 per game last
season Oregon showed
balanced scoring, with five
players in double figures Greig
and Williams with 15 each,
Cofield, 14, Brantley, 11, and
freshman Rodnie Taylor, 10
The Ducks will have little time
to prepare for their next
opponent—Cal-Riverside—who
comes to Mac Court Tuesday
night But at least Riverside
does not feature an All-Amer
ican center, nor does it return all
of its starters from last year as
Cal-lrvine does
"We played a very good team
tonight," Haney said "I would
have liked someone easier to
start out with "
"I'm disappointed, but not
discouraged I think we re
capable of playing far better "
