For openers, a loss
Kevin Magee,
early miscues,
seal Duck loss
By DONALD COULTER
Of th» EimtiW
Going into Saturday’s season
opener, Oregon basketball
coach Jim Haney feared the first
ten minutes of the game would
be crucial Too much enthu
siasm, he worried would cause
the Ducks to take hurried shots
on offense, and cause them to
over-commit on defense and
give up easy baskets
His team did just that
Despite a second half
comeback that saw the lead cut
to two points Oregon could
never overcome early jitters
—and a 17-point deficit—in los
ing its first home opener in eight
years, a 90-84 setback to Cal-lr
vine
"We dug ourselves in a hole
early," Haney said after the
game "I worried we would rush
shots, and that's just what we
did It took us 12 minutes to get
into the flow of the game "
By that time, Gal-lrvine had a
35-18 lead, forcing the Ducks to
play catch-up the rest of the
way
The Cal-lrvine Anteaters
threatened to make it a blowout
early Irvine's All-American
center Kevin Magee scored 13
points in the first si* minutes,
most of them coming off lob
passes and offensive rebounds
Defended at first by Jerome
Williams, and then by a 2-3
Oregon zone, Magee scored at
will, and seemed destined to
finish the night with at least 65
points
But when Magee returned to
action (after sitting out for five
minutes because of early foul
trouble), Haney gave forward
John Greig the unenviable task
of guarding the 6-8 senior
Greig responded by shutting
out Magee for the rest of the
half As a result, the Ducks
closed the gap to nine by half
time
"He's very basic—he does
nothing fancy," Greig said of
Magee "I just wanted to play
him intelligently—to beat him to
his spots "
Greig's defense continued to

spark the Ducks after halftime
Oregon grabbed control of the
boards, took advantage of
several Irvine turnovers, and
rode the shooting of Fred
Cofield and David Brantley to
climb within two, 69-67, with ten
minutes remaining
The teams traded baskets for
the next six minutes, as Magee
came to life again offen
sively Magee reeled off ten
points during that stretch, and
when he fouled out of the game
with 4 00 to go, the Mac Court
crowd of 6,652 sensed an
opportunity for the Ducks to
complete their comeback

Instead, Oregon started forc
ing bad shots and making care
less mistakes Meanwhile, the
Anteaters chewed up the clock
by going into a stall, and hung
on for the victory
"When they went into the
semi-delay, we let them do any
thing they wanted," Haney
said "They made intelligent
plays in the final minutes and we
did not. We made a lot of
foolish mistakes in the last three
minutes which killed us When
ever we got within two or four
points we would turn the ball
over or take careless shots " '
