You see your neighbor at the
store and notice that as he's
leaving, he backs into your car
You arrive home just in time to
see his dog eating your prize
winning tulips and his son throw
a baseball through your living
room window Showing his
community spirit, your neighbor
refuses to pay for the damage
You have three choices You
can drink your dinner that night
You can get an ulcer worrying
about legal fees
Or you can attend the
People's Law School's session
on small claims court and learn
what your rights and
responsibilities are. and how to
proceed on your own
The People s Law School was
started 10 years ago by Univer
sity law school students Accor
ding to Sue Heinl, of Lane
County Legal Aid. law students
who feel "isolated by rigorous
study" get a chance to apply
what they've learned by
participating in the sessions
"Many people are intimidated
by the law, primarily because of
the complex language that is
used.” Heinl says The People's
Law School's goal is to ' de
mystify the law by translating
blackboard concepts into
layman's terms "
Lane County Legal Aid acts in
an administrative capacity,
Heinl says They have staff

Recently, about 40 people
attended a session entitled,
"Taking Your Case to Small
Claims Court " Four law
students — Bob Needham,
Debra Dorman. Steve Dingle,
and Marc Tanzer — reviewed
the entire small claims
procedure from filing for
damages to collecting damages
awarded by the court
Dingle opened the discussion
by explaining that the purpose
of Small Claims Court is to settle
claims for money, property, or
damages valued under $700
with minimal trouble and ex
pense
"The philosophy behind it is
that it's a people s court No
lawyers are allowed in the
courtroom." he said
One young couple who own
their own landscaping firm said
the session will be a big help to
them in running their business
Because every dollar is vital to
a small business the couple are
concerned about how to collect
overdue accounts Dealing w>*t
busy officials who are unwill^^
to take the time to explain le^P
procedures is very frustrating
they say
And they strongly agree with
Hein I s statement that the
People s Law School is an
"invaluable resource for the
community to use "
