climb behind the wheel of a car
Effective Nov 1, HB 2010 a
new state law cracks down on
drunk drivers
First offenders now face a
mandatory one-year license
suspension, up to $1,000 fine,
and one year in jail
If convicted a second time
offenders receive a three-year
license suspension, car im
poundment and the possibility
of fines or incarceration
The second-time offender
may apply for an occupational
license only after he passes an
examination by the Oregon
Mental Health Division proving
that he is not a problem drinker
If a third offense occurs within
five years of the first, the of
fender's license is revoked for
10 years
Yet another offense within
five years and the driver loses
his license for three more years
The penalties include car im
poundment fines and the pos
siblity of imprisonment But this
time an occupational license
can't be applied for in 90 days

An organization called Mothers
Against Drunk Drivers pushed
tor the strict changes in that
state s laws Candy Lightner
began organizing the group
which now has 30 chapters in
nine states after her daughter
was killed by a drunk driver
Oregon doesn't have an of
ficial chapter yet, but Carol
Satterfield of Beaverton is work
ing on it We re in the process
of becoming a chapter We have
authorization from MADD and
now we re getting the paper
work finished Satterfield said
