STANFORD, Calif
Oregon's defense knew it would
be in for a tough test Saturday
afternoon at Stanford Stadium
Led by All-Americans John
Elway and Darrin Nelson, the
Cardinals routed the Ducks 42-3
on a balmy Bay area afternoon
"The first 30 minutes were the
worst we played this year," said
Oregon coach Rich Brooks
"But I don't want to take any
thing away from Stanford — they
played very well today "
Two players who played very
well were Nelson and Elway
Going into the game, Nelson,
the senior tailback from Los
Angeles, needed just 78 all
purpose yards" to break Tony
Dorsett's NCAA mark
Nelson broke the mark early
in the second quarter, and as
quick as he broke the mark he
also broke the Ducks, running
for 122 yards in 26 carries In
addition, the all-purpose back
caught six passes tor 60 yards
and scored twice on the after
noon
Elway, meanwhile, was light
ing up the airways in the first
half of play
For the game, the Heisman
Trophy candiditate connected
on 21 of 30 passes for 227 yards
and two touchdowns He was
intercepted twice
The Ducks’ first opportunity
to score came with 5:59
remaining in the first half when
they drove to the Stanford 13.
But on fourth and 1, Harry Bil
lups fumbled the ball while car
rying it to the corner
Ducks fall at Region 8;
McChesney takes 2nd
STANFORD, Calif. — Bill
McChesney's bid to defeat
Washington State's Richard
Tuwei failed Saturday as once
again the Oregon senior fin
ished second to the 25-year-old
freshman at the NCAA Region 8
cross country championships,
held this year at Stanford
Things didn't go well tor the
rest of the Oregon squad either,
as the Ducks failed to qualify for
the nationals for the first time
since 1969
McChesney recovered from a
wrong turn during the meet to
capture second place and a
berth at the NCAA meet in Wi
chita, Kan next week
Oregon finished third with 116
points behind UCLA (70) and
Arizona (71), partly due to a
knee injury sustained by Greg
Erwin at the two-mile mark Er
win finished the race in 22nd
place Other finishers for the
Ducks were Derek Shirley
(24th), Rick Cleek (33rd) and
Greg Hitchcock (35th)
McChesney, and the Ken
yans, Tuwei and Peter Koech
were the early leaders in the
race before the Ducks' top run
ner made a wrong turn that
pulled the freshmen along with
him McChesney and Tuwei
made up the ground, but Koech
soon fell back

"Billups just dropped the
ball." Brooks said "Just like
everything else this season, it
didn’t work "
The Ducks finally got on the
scoreboard with 14 46 remain
ing, when Doug Jollymour con
nected on a 40-yard field goal
That made the score 28-3, and
the way the defense was per
forming in the second Half, the
Ducks were thinking comeback
But the Cardinals squelched
any comeback attempts by
scoring two touchdowns in a
span of 56 seconds midway
through the final frame
