Ducks meet Stanford
Ducks' offense
must perform
to help defense
By JEFF DICKERSON
OltnEiMnU
A quick overview of Satur
day's football game between
Oregon (1-8) and Stanford (2-7)
might produce the feeling that
the game will be a boring affair
between two teams that have
had identically horrible sea
sons
The two teams, however,
cannot be compared easily
Stanford, a team that boasts
the likes of Darrin Nelson and
John Elway, has been able to
score a lot of points this year,
while the Ducks have been leth
argic at best on the offensive
side of the ball
The Cardinals are averaging
31 points per game against
Pacific 10 Conference oppon
ents, while Oregon has man
Reggie Brown
aged a mere 7 5 average in six
Pac-10 games A more telling
comparison might come from
game scores with teams Stan
ford and Oregon both have
faced this year
Both teams have played
games against Washington,
Arizona State, Arizona and
UCLA Against those teams,
Stanford has averaged 26 5
points per game, while the
Ducks have averaged 7 points
per game
On the other side of the coin,
however, the Ducks clearly have
the advantage Against those
same teams the Oregon
defense has allowed 21.7 points
per game, while Stanford has
given up an average of 36 points
per game
The problem arises, however,
as it has several times this sea
son, when the impotent Duck
offense gives its proud defense
few breaks between posses
sions Against a potent offense,
the wear and tear of the game
begins to show on the score
board
The reason why the Cardinals
have been able to score an
abundance of points this sea
son lies in the prowess of Nel
son and Elway
At tailback, Nelson is just 78
yards away from replacing Tony
Dorsett as the all-time NCAA
rushing leader, and at quarter
back, Elway has completed 175
of 309 passes for 2,202 yards
this season
If the Duck defense is to have
any kind of chance at stopping
the two spark plugs of the Stan
ford offense, it will have to have
some help on the other side of
the ball by the Oregon offense
DUCK NOTES - Oregon tail
back Reggie Brown needs 42
yards to become the eighth
ranked rusher in the history of
the University Oregon’s last
victory over the Cardinals was a
1979 16-7 upset in Stanford
stadium
Women host regionals
Oregon's women's soccer squad will host the Northwest
Collegiate Soccer Conterence regional tournament Saturday and
Sunday at the Jefferson Jr High fields at 24th and Polk Street
The Ducks, ranked fourth in the nation, will play Pacific
Lutheran in the first round match The winner plays in a later game
in the afternoon
If they advance, Oregon will play in the semi-finals Sunday at 10
am, and in the finals at 2 p m
Oregon, at 8-0-2 for the season, has already assured itself of a
bid in the NCAA national tournament by winning the NCSC league
title
Others competing over the weekend will be Washington, Univ
of Portland, Linfield, Washington State, Evergreen College, Lewis &
Clark. Puget Sound and Western Washington
Oregon men to race in Pac-10 meet
Oregon senior Bill McChesney will lead the
men's cross country team into the Pacific 10
Conference/NCAA Division 8 championship Sat
urday. but the Ducks must overcome title bids by
UCLA and Arizona in the meet at Stanford Golf
Course in Palo Alto, Calif
The Ducks must finish either first or second in
the meet to qualify for the NCAA national cham
pionship Nov 23 in Witchita, Kan Last year, three
teams from the division qualified for nationals,
and the Ducks got under the wire to score 67
points for third, behind Arizona's 59 and UCLA's
43
In this year's Southern Division meet, Arizona's
All-Americans, Don Janicki and Harrison Koroso
finished first and third respectively, but that
wasn't enough to overcome UCLA's depth The
Bruins won the team crown with 39 points, while
Arizona followed with 52
Oregon took first in the Northern Division meet,
but first place went to Washington State's Richard
Tuwei who outkicked McChesney at the finish
Oregon Coach Bill Dellinger says Tuwei, Jan
icki, McChesney and WSU's Peter Koech should
be among the leaders at Stanford
“I really don't know the personnel of the teams
in the Southern Division,'' Dellinger says, "but we
all need to be healthy if we re going to qualify our
team for nationals."
Duck spikers host MSU
The Oregon volleyball team will face Montana
State in a Northwest Volleyball League match
Saturday night in MacArthur Court at 8 p m
The Ducks, who are 3-5 in the league and
12-29-2 on the season, will be trying to keep their
string of three consecutive NWVL wins going
when they host the Bobcats
They're a good team and we'll have to play
well to beat them We ll need the kind of effort we
had in our match with Montana if we re going to
do it " said Oregon coach Chris Voelz, referring to
her team's recent win over the University of
Montana
"We played well in parts of our match with
Montana and we want to carry over those good
things against MSU We feel that if we play the
kind of game we want to, we should be able to
take it "
