Stockman offers
Reagan resignation
WASHINGTON
David Stockman architect of
Pres Reagan's budget-cutting
crusade, offered his resignation
Thursday for saying that
Reaganomics might not work,
but said the president "asked
me to stay on the team "
Stockman told a news con
ference Thursday afternoon
that he offered his resignation to
Reagan "because my poor
judgment and loose talk did him
and his program a serious dis
service "
He spent 45 minutes confer
ring with Reagan amid the poli
tical uproar over his published
acknowledgement of skep
ticism about the administration
budget and tax cut program in
the December issue of Atlantic
Monthly
' At the end of the meeting,
the president asked me to stay
on the team." Stockman said
The director of the Office of
Management and Budget was
quoted in the Atlantic Monthly
article as saying that Reagan’s
economic plan was essentially
an updated term tor the old
philosophy of giving tax breaks
to the wealthy in hopes the
benefits would "trickle down"
to the rest of society
He also was quoted as saying
that Reagan could not balance
the budget, criticizing the final
version of the tax cut passed by
Congress and saying of the
program s optimistic economic
projections "None of us really
understands what's going on
with all these numbers "
Reaction from Congress was
split along party lines
Congressional Democrats
said Thursday that Stockman
has so damaged his credibility
that he might as well have re
signed
But Republicans, while ad
mitting Stockman may have
some short-term credibility
problems generally supported
Reagan s decision to keep his
embattled budget director on
the job
Columbia mission
may be shortened
CAPE CANAVERAL. Fla.
Columbia s crew after taking
the shuttle on a brilliant return to
space Thursday, was told that
their five-day mission was likely
to be cut — perhaps in half The
astronauts were not in danger
and NASA laid plans for a land
ing as early as Saturday
A space agency spokesman
explained the mission could
continue beyond Saturday "if
things were looking well, a day
at a time " The problem was
with an electricity-producing
fuel cell but two others worked
fine
In the meantime, Joe Engle
and Richard Truly were expect
ed to cram as much of their
flight exercises as possible into
Friday s schedule
The fuel cell problem caused
NASA to announce that it was
invoking rules calling for a
mimimum flight of 54 hours
That word came less than seven
hours after Columbia s 10 10
a m EST liftoff
Several hours later, NASA's
John McLeaish in Houston said
that did not mean that the shut
tle would have to come down
after 54 hours — only that the
critical items would be pushed
into that time frame
