Pressure filled the air at the Stanford
Golf Course Monday morning
“This was definitely a pressure race."
said Oregon women's cross country
Coach Tom Heinonen of the District 9
cross country championships held Mon
day morning in Stanford, Calif
“Before hand, there were four teams
who had a shot at winning the race
Nobody knew what would happen — I
didn't have a clue who would win “
What happened was Heinonen s
Ducks ran away with the team title to
talling 52 points to easily outdistance
runners-up Stanford and San Diego
State who both had 73 Arizona finished
fourth with 91
The top three automatically qualify for
nationals with the possibility of Arizona
receiving an at-large berth
District Nine is such a competitive
cross country district that the top four
teams are all ranked in the top 10 of
women's cross country — Stanford is
second. Oregon third, Arizona fifth and
San Diego State, eighth
The Ducks had things just about their
own way throughout the race
According to Heinonen, the Ducks
were solid right down from the No 1
runner to the No 5 runner
“The thing that surprised me was that
we were able to get five people into the
top 20 and no one else could.' Heinonen
said "I thought we could get our first five
into the top 25 and I was hoping for the
top 20 But I didn't know if that would be
enough to win."
Leann Warren led the Ducks with a
fourth-place finish, but said she was not
satisfied with her performance
"I'm kind of disappointed with my
race," Warren said "I expected to do
better I just lost contact in the middle of
the race and I couldn't get it back "
The next Duck to cross the finish line
was Lisa Martin in a surprising sixth
place
"Lisa just put it all together today,"
said Heinonen "She has had problems
all season long and it was great to see
her run like she did She was the key to
our finish ''
Martin had been plagued by the flu and
anemia all season long and according to
Heinonen, she is now beginning to get
back into top form
Junior Eryn Forbes and freshman
Kathy Hayes were the next two Oregon
runners to hit the tape
As the story has been all season long,
Forbes and Hayes finished nearly neck
and-neck in 11th and 12th place —
Forbes just edging out Hayes by two
seconds
"Eryn has been able to run only every
other day and I think she ran a very
smart, agressive race,' Heinonen said
The Ducks rounded out their scoring
when Rosa Gutierrez another freshman,
crossed the line in 19th place The
remainder of the Oregon contingent —
freshman Claudette Qroenendaal and
Kathi Sommer — finished in 31st and
45th places
"The freshmen handled the pressure
very well," said Heinonen "A number of
other freshmen in the race did not handle
it so well It was their first championship
race and they ran extremely well
"The thing that is most impressive is
that our team took control of the race at
the mile mark and never let go The only
team ahead of us at the time was Stan
ford and they were fading "
The individual title was thought to be a
toss-up between Warren, Monica Joyce
of San Diego State and Joan Hansen of
Arizona With a number of others who
could step in and win it
But it was Joyce who captured in
dividual honors in 16:28 9, with Hansen
finishing second in 16.31 and freshman
Ceci Hoppe of Stanford claiming third in
16 34
Next in line for the Ducks is the NCAA
national cross country championships in
Wichita Kan . on Nov 23
"Right now Virginia looks head and
shoulders above everybody else," said
Heinonen "But with a performance like
we had today second-place is realistic
But it's hard to say in cross country
Anybody could win "
And on Monday, it was the Ducks who
did just that
