Are the surprising Cougars for real?
Gridders travel
to Pullman to
find the answer

Who are the Washington
State Cougars and what are
they doing near the top of the
Pac-10 standings7
That's the question being
asked by all of college football
about the surprising Cougars
(6-1-1), who have jumped off to
their best start since 1942
Saturday, Rich Brooks and his
Oregon football 9quad travel to
Pullman, Wash to find out for
themselves
Picked to finish near the
basement of the conference, it
took eight weeks for the
19th-ranked Cougars to be
upended — finally losing to USC
last week, 41-17 But while most
observers were surprised by
WSU's fast start. Brooks says he
wasn't
"The only thing that surprised
me was that they beat Arizona
State (24-21 at Pullman),"
Brooks says "Arizona State is
just a superb team It is
indicative of Washington State's
character that they could beat a
team of that stature "
Despite the lopsided score of
the USC game, WSU rolled up
383 total yards against a Trojan
defense that had been allowing
only 310 per game The
Cougar's balanced offense,
which leads the Pac-10 in total
yardage, has been the key to
their success this year Tailback
Tim Harris (the league's 5th
leading rusher) and fullback
Robert Williams pace the
rushing attack, while Clete
Casper and "supersub" Ricky
Harris share the quarterbacking
duties
The Cougar s high powered
offense is in sharp contrast to
the Ducks, who are at the
bottom of the Pac-10 offensive
statistics Oregon has scored
only three touchdowns in their
last five games And unfor
tunately for the Ducks, it looks
like things may get worse before
they get better
Once again, Brooks will be
forced to play musical chairs
with his quarterbacks, as
freshman Mike Owens won't be
making the trip Owens, who
started Oregon’s last two
games, injured his shoulder
early in the first quarter last
week against UCLA and was
forced to leave the game He did
not practice with the team this
week
Brooks says he will start a
“semi-healthy" Mike Jorgensen
at QB Against UCLA,
Jorgensen came into the game
in place of Owens and
completed 14 of 22 passes for
201 yards and a touchdown
pass Prior to last week.
Jorensen had seen limited
action, and had been nursing a
bad knee recently
In addition. Brooks says that
junior Kevin Lusk will be
available if needed Lusk, the
Ducks’ starting quarterback
early in the season, suffered a
shoulder seperation four weeks
ago against Arizona State He
has not played since, but
Brooks says his shoulder is now
about 80 percent healed
Elsewhere in the injury
department. Brooks announced

that linebacker Chris Cosgrove
and defensive lineman Steve
Johnson are probable starters
for the game. Earlier this week,
the playing status of both
looked doubtful Johnson is
coming off his finest game of the
season, as he was in on 16
tackles (12 of them unassisted)
against UCLA
The presence of Cosgrove
and Johnson doesn’t do much
to ease the fears of WSU head
coach Jim Walden It is the Duck
defense — number one in the
Pac-10 — that has Walden
concerned
"Oregon has a better overall
defense than USC,” Walden
said over the phone yesterday
"USC may have better athletes,
but Oregon's entire defensive
scheme is sounder. And their
secondary is much better than
USC
"It may take us all afternoon
to get into the endzone."
And how does he feel about
Oregon’soffense?
"Right now, they don’t have
any They have some excellent
running backs, but they are
hurting at quarterback”
Though the setback to USC
last week makes it difficult for
the Cougars to go to the Rose
Bowl — WSU needs to win its
remaining three games and
hope that USC stumbles
somewhere — Walden remains
optimistic about landing a bowl
bid somewhere else.
“Our objective is to stay with
USC (in the standings),” he
said. "The longer we stay alive
for the Rose Bowl, the better our
chances. The rest of things will
probably take care of
themselves."
DUCK NOTES - Flanker
Osborne Thomas, third on the
team in receptions, probably
won't make the trip to WSU. He
flew to Los Angeles this week to
be with his mother, who recently
suffered a heart attack
Here's an unusual statistic for a
1-7 team: the Ducks have
gained 17 more first downs than
their opponents this year
The last time WSU defeated
Oregon was in 1977, Brooks'
first year as head coach, by a
56-20 score in Pullman.
