library's golden birthday
With its rug-covered hardwood floor, over
stuffed sofas and wood-manteled fireplaces, the
Gerlinger Alumni Lounge was the ideal setting tor
a literary lecture
This was the backdrop Monday for John
Cole, executive director of the Library of Con
gress, when he spoke in honor of the University
Library s 100th anniversary
"The book is an important, anytime, anywhere
do-it-yourself, energy-free communication
device." Cole said to the audience of abut 40
Cole devoted most of his talk to explaining
various programs and ideas covered by the Li
brary of Congress Center for the Book
Cole related a quote from one of the Library
of Congress librarians, Archibald McLeash
McLeash called the Library of Congress a for
tress of freedom, but above all else, a library for
the people "
Cole said that those are still the sentiments of
the Library and its staff
"You owe it to yourself to visit the Library,
Cole said
Cole also talked about the Center for the
Book, an organization he heads He said the
center is involved in several programs and cam
paigns
One of the programs defends books against the
their biggest competitor, television Titled Read
More About It," the program :s designed to
encourage people, especially children, to regard
books as a medium at least equal to television
A magician, David Copperfield. hosted a
program on CBS about magic At the end of the
program, he gave viewers the names of some
books that would give them more information
about magic

The Center for the Book is also interested in
solving technical problems involved in publishing
Cole said "Believe it or not. we are trying to push
book publishers into using acid-free paper in their
printings "
The problem with paper that contains too
much acid is that it becomes brittle when it ages
Cole said he hopes to apply enough subtle pres
sure to cause publishers to use acid-tree paper
