A complete home
in a single room
David Simone lives in a yurt
He's lived in one tor the last two and a half years
Although its name and shape may imply a giant
inverted yogurt carton, the yurt is a canvas and wood
dwelling that originated in Mongolia
Sixteen feet in diameter and 11 feet high on the
inside, there are 200 square feet of living space in
which Simone has managed to fit his bedroom,
livingroom and kitchen
Although he has to use an outdoor shower and
latrine, Simone does have running water pumped
from a nearby apple-orchard well, and two propane
powered lights inside A 50-gallon drum in a tree next
to the yurt feeds water into a hose, providing water
for his shower and kitchen sink
Facing his third winter Simone says, "It's easier
in the summer than it is in the winter "
Simone just finished winterizing his yurt by
covering the canvas roof with a vinyl laminate
tarpaulin and wrapping the sides with visquine
plastic He also just finished storing a large supply of
winter wood
Simone's winterized yurt is covered with a vinyl tarpaulin and wrapped in
plastic to protect it from rain and mold
