'Cats stop Oregon
Blocked field goal seals Ducks’ fate in 18-14 loss
By STEVE SPATZ
You've got to give coach Rich Brooks credit —
he did nearly everything he could in order tor his
Oregon football team to beat Arizona Saturday at
Autzen Stadium
You name it. he tried it From double reverses
bogus punts naked reverses and fake PAT
attempts, to playing a quarterback who could only
hand-off
But when it came down to the difference in the
Wildcats 18-14 win, it was simple blocking and
tackling — or the tack thereof —
that meant the fifth loss in five
outings tor the Ducks
•'We failed to make the key
play to win the game when we
had to. Brooks said as he
watched the prospects to sal
vage a winning season sink
nearly out of sight
The key play Brooks
referred to was when the block
ing breakdown occurred
The Ducks tried a potential
winning 43-yard field goal
with less than six minutes re
maining in the game and the
Wildcats ahead 15-14 But no
sooner had kicker Doug Jol
lymour put his foot through the ball, than Arizona
defensive back Al Gross slipped through a gap in
the much-aligned Duck line to smother the
attempt and the Ducks prospects for victory
Someone just shot through and got it said
center Mike Delegato who wasn t in on the play
It looked pretty clean
The big play came at the end of a valiant
Oregon drive, immediately following Arizona
tailback Vance Johnson's run of 11 yards for the
go-ahead score with 12 19 left Before that time
Oregon had never trailed up 11 -6 at the half 14-9
at the third quarter break
Tailback Reggie Brown and freshman quar
terback Mike Jorgensen carried the load from
their own 20 pounding out the tough yardage
and converting the big third and fourth-down
plays

The smile turned to a frown by
game s end
Finally, with third down ana
three on the Wildcat 22, Brown
fumbled and Jorgensen
pounced on the loose ball back
at the 26 setting up Jollymour's
ill-fated scoring attempt
I was nervous, going in on
that last drive Jorgensen said
l felt good after we had moved
the ball and I had a lot of con
fidence
"It's just too bad we couldn t
have converted on the field
goal ”
Jorgensen wasn t expected
to be playing in that crucial sit
uation. but when freshman
starter Mike Owens finally came
out at the end of the third quarter wun a Knee
injury the Eastern Oregon product came in and
moved the Ducks well
However, Jorgensen absorbed a shot to the
chest and head on the next play and the Ducks
were forced to play musical quarterbacks Kevin
Lusk himself injured and unable to throw or run
