Fadeley accepts job with KWAX I
By ANN PORTAL
Of the E mar aid
The new public affairs director of
KWAX — the University’s public radio
station — probably is best known as a
former representative in the Oregon
Legislature
But Nancie Fadeley says at this point in
her career, she'd rather be thought of as
a journalist
"I have always considered myself a
writer who really never had the time,”
Fadeley says
"This is an opportunity for me to do
some of the stories that my lifestyle just
didn't give me a chance to do in the
past "
Fadeley, who now is in charge of all
news produced at KWAX, brings to the
station experience forged by five con
secutive terms as a Democratic repre
sentative and a career of writing
freelance articles on Oregon history and
life
Her articles have appeared in a
number of publications, including Ms ,
Old Oregon, Parents, Ranger Rick —
“that's my favorite" — and Sierra Club, in
addition to several Oregon newspapers
Fadeley, who received a master's de
gree from the University journalism
school, says she is excited about the
chance to work in public radio, free from
the rigid time limits of commerical radio
National and local news programs can
be more "innovative" and "in-depth” on
public radio, Fadeley says, adding that
she would like to hear more stories about
Oregon
Because of her past experience,
Fadeley says she favors a "magazine-of
the-air” approach for news features
about the state KWAX does not have the
staff or budget to handle fast-breaking
news, so the emphasis must be on thor
ough treatment of "soft-news,” she says.
Most people still think of her as an
advocate because of past legislative
work, but Fadeley says she really con
siders herself a professional journalist.
‘‘I think I can be very objective
broadcasting the news,” Fadeley says,
"except I really think I’m an Oregon
chauvinist.”
Besides the opportunity to produce
her own programs, Fadeley says she was
attracted to KWAX by a high level of
volunteer support and the chance to
work with students
"I’m looking forward to it,” she says
"I like it — I like it very much.”

Lawsuit

Willner said James Casby Jr.,
the assistant attorney general
representing the State Board of
Higher Education, maintained
that the plaintiffs failed to prove
that the incidents of sex dis
crimination occurred
The state also unsuccessfully
argued that the alleged in
cidents of sex discrimination
resulted from policies set by the
five individual schools, not by
the board
' But we won on both those
points,” Willner said
Frye gave the plaintiffs 60
days to add a representative
from Southern Oregon State
College. Eastern Oregon State
College and Oregon Institute of
Technology — the three state
colleges not represented in the
original suit
Willner said that none of the
13 original plaintiffs alleged that
all the types of charges
happened to one individual in a
single institution
"The fact that sex discrimina
tion may manifest itself in
different ways and may affect
individual class members differ
ently at different times and in
different institutions does not
preclude maintaining this action
as a class action," she said
‘ Plaintiffs have presented
statistics tending to show a
statewide pattern of disparity
between men and women
faculty members in promotion
and access to upper-echelon
positions, in addition to pay dif
ferentials," Frye said
Willner estimated the class
will include at least 1,850 faculty
women He said that all women
employed in the state system as
instructor or professor on or
after approximately July 1. 1979
will be included in the class
"The redress could include
money damages and could in
clude a variety of injunctive
reliefs if the court finds dis
crimination," Willner said
