Women’s golf down the hole
Program’s first season
is its oniy season

Four Oregon sports were cut from the budget five
months ago, leaving coaches, players and fans sur
prised and disappointed
The Emerald Sports department has put together
a five-part senes entitled "Feeling the Cuts." examin
ing each of the sports eliminated Part Two features
the women's golf squad
When the University athletic department faced the
prospect of cutting four varsity sports last spring, the
women's golf team didn't stand a chance
Oregon's women linksters were forced to look for
something else to do in the afternoon after their
first-year program was axed May 7.
Chris Voelz assistant director of women s inter
collegiate athletics, says the maintenance of each
sport is dependant on money resources as well the
popularity and tradition of the sport on campus
"The commitment here to these sports is all
functional to finances " Voelz says "If we had
beaucoup bucks we d have the most complete
program as anywhere."
If the lack of money was the only reason for
dropping golf, the athletic department would have
been better off dropping the women s swimming team
which outspent golf last year more than 2 to 1
Voelz says the total picture must be taken into
account when evaluating the worth of a sport

"It's (cutting a program) also determined by how
many high schools in the state have these programs "
she says Also how many Pac-10 schools have these
sports Six or seven have golf yet none have soccer
and all 10 have swimmina "
Voelz says decisions cut certain sports can
hinge on the length of time a program has been on
campus
' Do we cut some teams that have just been
brought into the program, or something that's been
here tor 50 years7 she asks
Janet Hemonen. women s sports information
director, remarks that interest in women's golf was
low When the hearings for cuts were held no one
showed up to support golf she says
As to the question whether or not women's golf
will ever come back Hetnonen said. Right now I don't
think anything will be brought back
The cuts leave former team members to either
relinquish their intercollegiate golf aspirations, or
leave the university
The coach, Jenny Feeney, who was doing
graduate work at Oregon last year returned to New
Zealand with her husband
According to Maureen McFaddin, a member of
last year s squad Sue Schadel, the team's
number-one golfer last year transferred to Oregon
State University and is playing golf there
Marti Loeb is now working at the Black Butte
Country Club and is attending classes at Central
Oregon Community College in Bend McFaddin Mary
Huson and Pat Murphy rounded out the team and all
three are still enrolled at the university
McFaddin says not playing golf has reshaped her
college life somewhat
Basically I'm not as earnest about golfing as I
was If it is raining I will stay in and study Not golfing
also allows me to take a full load at school
McFaddin remarks "I don t think the school
wants it (the women's golf program) back We were
willing to raise funds so we could play but the school
said it would put too much pressure on the students
and there would be no guarantee that the students
would come back to school
"Golf was a new sport and it was never given a chance
to grow Unless there is a change in administrative
policy or there becomes funds available to fund it golf
won t come back
