Different ways
Balogh believes in a number
of different ways to approach
people about fund-raising
"Some people respond to a
letter," Balogh says "Others
respond to the event form of
fund-raising For instance,
when the Oregon Clubs have an
auction, they realize that they're
going to spend a little bit more
money for some articles than
they would normally spend at
the store, but in so doing they
have a good time and know it's
all for the good of the order of
Oregon athletics ”
"Then there are people who
want a very personal, private
approach," Balogh explains
"They want to be told the
specifics about what it is you're
trying to do to make Oregon
athletics improved, if it's
something that they can be
proud of and have confidence
in And that takes a little differ
ent kind of approach."
No matter who is being
approached. Balogh's style is a
personal one
Balogh says his philosophy is
that fund raising needs to
proceed on an individual and
personal basis
People like to know all the
facts They want to know the
specifics They want to feel that
somebody knows enough about
them to present a logical plan
that says This is what we re
doing to improve Oregon athle
tics, and this is where we think
you might fit in,1 "Balogh says
Even with an added emphasis
on fund raising, Bay sees a need
for improvement in other areas,
such as capital improvements
Inadequate facilities
"Our facilities are not good,”
Bay says. "The office facilities in
McArthur Court need to be im
proved While Mac Court is a
great place to play basketball,
it’s obsolete in terms of its seat
ing capacity and its facilities
below the court We need to
resurrect our thinking about a
new arena, despite the state of
the economy.
Bay also says that a new
facility has been started at one
end of Autzen Stadium that will
allow football coach Rich
Brooks enough space to con
duct team meetings for his en
tire team
‘ Those things need to be
done,” Bay says, 'because
otherwise they put us at a great
disadvantage in terms of
recruiting When we get kids to
come here and look over our
campus, they see the deplora
ble locker room conditions we
have for games and for practice,
and the sad state of affairs of
our athletic facilities in gener
al.”
Recruiting is important to the
athletic department, particularly
in football and men 's basketball
According to Mike Easterly, the
department's acting business
manager, ticket revenue from

(AP) — Houston catcher Alan Ashby clubbed a two-out,
two-run homer over the right field fence in the ninth inning and
Nolan Ryan shut down Los Angeles on two hits to lead the Astros to
a 3-1 victory in the first game of their National League Western

The second game of the best-of-five playoff series is scheduled

Earlier in the American League, Wayne Gross hit a three-run

those two sports is the biggest
money-maker the department
has.
The projected football income
for 1981-82 is close to $1.7
million, while basketball is ex
pected to provide another
$740,000. Third on the list are
gifts and donations, and the ad

to supply a big boost in that
area
“I believe Rick Bay brings
with him an integrity and an
element of class that is needed
in the program,” Balogh says. "I
think he’s capable of making
good, sound decisions that are
not only in the best interests of
the athletic department, but also
in the best interests of the
University.”
“I certainly feel that under the
leadership and management of
Rick Bay, the athletic depart
ment will become a positive part
of the total University program,”
Easterly adds.
Bay cautions, however, that
the jury is still out.
"We won’t know for some
time as to how well things are
going fiscally," Bay says. “But
it’s my responsibility to balance
the budget, and I intend to see
that it's done.”
