The folder was presented to a select group of
Oregonians in the late summer of 1979, a group that
the University felt could come through with
individual six or seven figure pledges toward the
construction of a proposed 17,000 seat
wooden-domed basketball arena which would
replace aging McArthur Court
Now, in the fall of 1981, those folders sit tucked
away in desk drawers and file cabinets, thanks to a
bad economy and the stain of the athletic
department's various run-ins with the NCAA and
Pac-10
But Oregon's new athletic director, Rick Bay,
has begun the arduous process of putting plans for
the dome back on course
Bay has directed recently-appointed assistant
athletic director Randy Balogh — who heads the
Duck Athletic Fund — to survey the current state of
the dome project and begin setting plans back on
course
First step
As a first step, the University has gone ahead with
construction of a new facility on the east corner of
Autzen Stadium that will include meeting rooms for the
football team and a pre-game and post-game
gathering area for alumni.
It is a first step, says Bay, that is long overdue
Right now Rich Brooks doesn't even have a spot
over there where he can dress his entire team for a
home game in one place,” Bay says. "And you can't
have a full squad meeting anywhere in our facilities ”
The stadium club was begun in September using
over $600,000 in private donations, following a
summer drive by Brooks to raise the needed money
The new structure will serve a number of purposes,
says Bay, and in the process fulfill a promise the
University made to Brooks when he was offered the
head coaching job at Oregon almost five years ago
