Ducks go south
Netters to play in Cal tourney

Oregon’s volleyball team just can't seem to get enough of a
good thing
Just coming off a 17-day trip in California iast week, the Ducks
will head back this weekend when they compete in the Cal
Invitational — Dolphin Classic, in Berkeley
Oregon will again be taking on some of the nation’s top
ranked teams as they try to gain in experience and improve on
their 5-15-2 record.
Like a case of deja vu. the Ducks will take on seventh-ranked
Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in the first round. This will be the third
time the two teams have met in the last 11 days
“Last year I talked to their coach and we both decided we
would like to play each other this year But three times in less
than two weeks is something we could live without,’’ she said
Oregon hasn't done very well against Cal Poly, losing each
time in straight games. Voelz, though, has adjusted her goals
and hopes to do better.
“We would just like to score better against them,’’ she said.
“We hope to get closer to them each time we play, but you have
to be realistic, they have an excellent team.”

"I'm through tiptoeing
around I'm going back to being
Paul Bryant, and everyone
around me is gonna be Paul
Bryant, too, or they'll be gone,"
Alabama's 68-year-old coach
said Thursday. “I've been trying
to be a grand old nice guy, but
the hell with that I'm going back
to being myself I've turned out
some pretty good people that
way "
What got Bryant's dander up,
besides sluggish performances
against Kentucky and
Vanderbilt in the wake of a
shocking upset at the hands of
Georgia Tech, was a story in
Wednesday's Atlanta Constitu
tion that Alabama has been be
set by racial and morale prob
lems It is no secret that Bryant
has had to discipline several
players this season, suspending
All-American linebacker Thom
as Boyd for a game when
he missed a curfew and stayed
out all night
One of Bryant's closest
associates, who didn't want to
be identified, says the Bear has
changed his whole coaching
style as he nears Stagg s mark
of 314 victories Bryant has 309
going into Saturday's game with
Mississippi
"He’s been walking on egg
shells because of all the media
attention," said Bryant's
associate.
Whether the Bear will resort
to being the tough, drill ser
geant taskmaster of yesteryear
remains to be seen It usually
worked in the past, though
