NCAA to
continue
scrutiny
The University has received
the long-expected letter ot ot
ficial inquiry from the National
Collegiate Athletic Association
University officials said
Wednesday
The letter represents the next
phase of the athletic depart
ment investigation initiated by
the University in late 1979, says
Ray Hawk, vice president for
administration and finance
As a result of our internal
investigation, the University
took action concerning some ot
its employees and declared
certain athletes ineligible under
Pac 10 and NCAA rules,” Hawk
says
The University s investigation
covered five areas the possible
violation of University academic
integrity, the conduct of athletic
department employees the
possible ineligibility of student
athletes tfie extent of telephone
misuse, and what could be done
to improve internal procedures
The University asked the
NCAA to further investigate the
matter, and gave the associa
tion materials gathered in the
University investigation. Hawk
says
The letter received Wednes
day indicates the NCAA has
completed its preliminary inves
tigation and has moved to the
official inquiry phase, which
consists of the University ex
amining the NCAA's findings as
they relate to NCAA rules and
regulations
University officials have until
Jan 18 to reply
