Iranian government
executes 154 leftists

Iran announced Monday the
executions of 57 leftists tor
staging riots in Tehran aimed at
undermining "the effects’ of a
proclaimed victory over Iraqi
forces at Abadan
Khomeini s revolutionary
guards and other government
forces beat back the challenge
Sunday, and one resident
reported by telephone that the
city was quiet again Sunday
evening But he said there had
been fighting on every street
corner, behind every tree
everywhere It was the worst
and most violent street clashes
since the days of the revolu
tion ”
The state-run radio also said
52 leftists were put to death in
the central city of Isfahan, and
45 others were executed in
several Iranian cities for being
members of the outlawed
Mujahedeen Monday's execu
tions raised the officially report
ed total to 1.028 since the ouster
of President Abolhassan Bani

Court approves
constitution transfer
OTTAWA, Canada
The Supreme Court ruled in a
historic decision Monday that
Canada s law — but not its
tradition — allows the federal
government to press ahead with
its bid to transfer the Canadian
constitution here from Britain
The 52-page judgment said
the court was not ruling on the
content of the federal constitu
tional package but rather on the
question of legality of the ac
tion
Canada s only existing con
stitution is the British North
America Act of 1867 a
document drafted by the British
Parliament
Canadian Prime Minister El
liot Trudeau wants the act
brought home or patriated to
Canada as the Canada Act a
move requiring the consent of
the British Parliament He also
wants it amended by the British
Parliament to include a sweep
ing charter of human and civil
rights binding on the federal
and provincial governments
Coal production
expected to decline
WASHINGTON
The National Coal Associa
tion predicted Monday that a
72-day miners' strike and a
slump in the steel industry will
cause coal production to de
cline 4 percent this year
The association protected
that 795 million tons of coal will
be mined in 1981 compared to
824 million tons last year The
new 1981 projection is 55 mil
lion tons less than the associa
tion predicted in March
Eastern coal, affected more
by the strike, was predicted to
show a production drop of 67
million tons from the March es
timate while Western coal out
put was expected to increase by
12 million tons, to 275 million
tons total
Avowed racist
sentenced to life
SALT LAKE CITY
Shouting obscenities and an
ethnic slur Joseph Franklin was
sentenced to two consecutive
life sentences in state prison
Monday tor the sniper slayings
of two young blacks
In sentencing Franklin, 3rd
District Judge Jay E Banks told
the avowed racist. It will be my
recommendation to the (state)
Board of Pardons that you never
get out of prison
Franklin responded with a
string of obscenities and an an
ti-Semitic remark to Banks who
is not Jewish as he was taken
from the courtroom
Senate rejects
debt amendments
WASHINGTON
The Senate reacted a series
of amendments Monday that
Republican leaders said could
endanger a bill to boost the debt
limit to more than $1 trillion so
the government can pay its bills
By a vote of 56-32 the Senate
turned down an amendment by
Sen John Melcher, D-Mont to
require President Reagan to
consult with the Federal
Reserve Board in an effort to
reduce interest rates within 90
days
The senators also defeated
58-30 a move by Sen Gary
Hart. D Colo . to trim ta*
deductions for business
lunches from 100 percent to 70
percent and use the proceeds to
restore funds cut from school
lunch programs
On a 74-13 vote they tabled—
that is, killed — another Hart
proposal to postpone any in
dividual income tax cut until the
federal budget is balanced

effort to win Congress approval
for selling AWAGS radar planes
