Washington faces
severe budget cuts
SEATTLE - University of
Washington officials are con
sidering closing the school for a
week or two. possibly at the end
of the tall quarter, to save mon
ey, says the school's president
By taking employees off the
payroll and shutting the doors,
the university couid save more
more than $1 million to help
cope with its budget cnsis. Dr

The closure would be "a one
time. first-ypar" temporary
solution, but wouldn’t solve the
bigger problem of cutting $33
million from the university's
biennial operating budget to
meet a 10 1 percent state bud
get cut ordered by Gov John
Spellman Gerberding said
If the Legislature fails to
relieve the dollar crisis in higher
education, the university may
eliminate some schools and
colleges Gerberding said on an
interview program on Seattla's
KING television
Although University of
Washington regents will auth
orize broad outlines of cuts
Friday the real ’hit list" won't
come until later. Gerberding
said He estimated notice of any
major layoffs of regular faculty
members probably would not
come until late November or
early December
Gerberding was cool to what
he called a "desperate sugges
tion" by state Sen Ted Haley,
R-Tacoma. that the university's
10-acre Metropolitan Tract in
downtown Seattle be sold to
raise money for state coffers
Tract income to the universi
ty. ranging between $2 million
and $5 million every two years,
is "precious money" used tor
minor repairs and other protects
"the state is loathe to fund,"
Gerberding said
Gerberding said chances are
"very real" that students will
become politically active
because they are paying more
and getting less at the universi
ty
"I think parents and students
both will realize that the
education enterprise is being
diminished ' he said "I hope
they will express themselves on
this score in Olympia and else
where ”
Protesters
march past
Diablo plant
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif -
Hundreds of people who live
near the Diablo Canyon nuclear
power plant marched past Its
mam gates Sunday in support of
protesters who have maintained
a blockade of the facility since
Sept 15. authorities said
The march was the second by
residents of the area The
previous Sunday, 5,000 people
turned out in sympathy with the
attempted Abatone Alliance
blockade, which is to end today
“It was a spontaneous thing
last week and people felt they
wanted to do it again," said
Sandy Nunes, manager of
Andy's Munchies restaurant in
Avila Beach, where about 1.000
marchers had gathered for the
demonstration
The 1Vi-mile march from
downtown Avila Beach, a town
of 350, to the plant gate wasn't
aimed at interfering with access
to the $2 3 billion plant unlike
the Alliance demonstrations
The Alliance, a coalition of 60
anti-nuclear groups opposed to
nuclear energy in general and
Pacific Gas & Electric's seaside
facility in particular, planned to
stage their final blockade Mon
day But spokesman Steve
Leeds said the groups planned
to continue their opposition to
Diablo
The plant is located just a few
miles from an offshore earth
quake fault
