Cash available
for humanities
media projects
The number of projects that get scrapped as soon as they
are brainstormed could fill a waste basket the size of the
federal budget deficit The reason is almost always the same
— no money
But the National Endowment for the Humanities has been
helping some of those projects reach completion with cash
grants to qualified individuals or groups
Although their grants program was threatened by severe
cutbacks in federal aid, NEH says their "Youthgrant Pro
gram" is "alive and well" and will offer a limited number of
awards to people in their teens and twenties
According to an announcement by NEH, 75 grants of as
much as $2,500 for individuals and $10,000 for groups will be
awarded for non-credit, out-of-the-classroom research
projects that deal with the humanities
The deadline to apply for the grants is Nov 16
Youthgrants "are intended primarily for those between
18 and 25 who have not yet completed academic or profes
sional training but can demonstrate the ability to design and
perform outstanding humanities research and translate that
into an end product to share with others," according to the
announcement
Past projects that received NEH grants include a collec
tion and study of migrant worker border ballads in South
Texas and a film on a small town in Oregon that resorted to
backyard goldmining to survive the Great Depression
But any project related to the humanities will be con
sidered. including such subjects as history, comparative
religion, ethnic studies, folklore, anthropology, linguistics, art
history and philosophy
NEH stresses that the program does not offer scholar
ships. tuition aid or support for degree-related work, intern
ships or foreign-travel projects
Those interested in the program should write to Youth
grant Guidelines, Mail Stop 103-C. National Endowment for
