Sidewalks
Continued from Pago 23B
At the beginning ot fall term,
the bike racks will block the
south side of the street, with
side-by-side bike lanes on the
north side Before the end of the
term the racks will be moved
first to the center of the street
with the bike lanes separated on
both sides of 13th and then to
both sides of the street with the
bike lanes side by side in the
middle of the street
Rowe asks cyclists to
remember three things when
they're riding on campus
realize that you are moving
much faster than walkers, think
about your own safety, and be
considerate about sharing
streets and sidewalks
Tim Mrtchell. a senior in Inter
national Studies and co-director
of the Political Science Student
Union, says he is preparing for
some serious disputes between
cyclists and pedestrians this
fall
Unclear rules on right-of-way.
the narrowed west end of East
13th Avenue and the lack of
posted speed limits endanger
inattentive pedestrians and
thoughtless cyclists. Mitchell
says
"As soon as you get in the
road, it's everyone for himself
he says
While the experiments may
provide data tor solving traffic
problems, the perennial ques
tion of where to park a bike on
campus will probably be harder
to answer this year
Rowe estimates an average of
3,600 bikes are parked on cam
pus each day The University
maintains 2.300 bike-parking
spaces on campus — 1.300 less
than the present demand
• There are not enough
spaces (to park a bike) right
now. so I look for inventiveness,
but tempered by considera
tion." Rowe says He strongly
discourages chaining bikes to
small trees and campus regula
tions forbid parking in front of
doorways The long-range
solution calls for 1.300 new
bicycle parking spaces, but
Rowe admits that bike ac
comodation continues to be a
real problem "
Brye hoDes the University can
convince the legislature to in
vest in a new bike-parking con
cept — bike lockers Brye es
timates that the lockers cost
$500 each — about twice the
cost of a covered slot, but he
thinks the University could rent
the lockers for $2 50 a month
"The lockers are dry and
theft-proof." Brye says "I think
the University should buy 10
lockers, install them and see if
people would rent them "
