just to find information?
Relax and call Switchboard,
an information and referral
service offered by Lane County
"If we can find information,
we do it If not, we'll try to find
someone who can,” says Scott
Slovic, one of 25 Switchboard
volunteers
People call Switchboard for
just about everything, Slovic
says He handles calls on where
to find the nearest health-food
store and calms callers facing a
potential crisis
In addition. Switchboard acts
as a "charity service.” providing
information on where to find
food and shelter. Slovic says
"We often refer people to the
Eugene Mission or other
religious organizations." he
says
Funded primarily through
grants and donations. Switch
board gets some of its funds
from federal revenue sharing,
says Volunteer Coordinator Ma
rie Fink
Additional money comes from
sales of a human resources file,
available to groups and in
dividuals, Fink says
The ASUO gave Switchboard
$2,600 during the 1981-82
school year Most of that money
will pay for telephones, accord
ing to ASUO records Students
are some of the biggest users of
Switchboard's services
Volunteers tor Switchboard
are trained once a week for
three weeks. Slovic says
"A lot of people who can't find
work come to Switchboard
because it's good experience
and they can get references ''

Ronald Reagan's budget cuts
will affect their eligibility tor food
stamps can breathe easy — for
the time being
"We've received (word of)
nothing that actually affects
students,’’ says Julie Singer
supervisor at the Eugene
branch of the food stamp office
Students are eligible for food
stamps if they work 20 hours a
week, or if they have a work
study job, Singer says Heads of
households with dependents
and disabled individuals also
are eligible she says
An appointment is necessary
when applying for food stamps.
