Warehouse market wins price check
A simple price survey in
dicates that a supermarket's
proximity to the University is
reflected in the prices the store
charges
Waremart, a "no frills' super
market in west Eugene under
priced Safeway and McKay's
Market in a price comparison of
10 typical grocery products
Waremart is located at 2101
W 11th Ave.. about 2% miles
from campus, compared to a
mile journey to the Safeway at
145 E 18th Ave and even less
distance to McKay's, only a few
blocks from campus at 1960
Franklin Blvd
The goods compared includ
ed chicken, cheese, margarine,
toilet paper, milk, orange juice,
cat food. Budweiser beer,
peanut butter and bread
Waremart's total bill came to
$22 80. Safeway's was $24 28
and the highest — McKay's —
was $25 56
Standard brands were used in
the survey for unbiased com
parisons. but each supermarket
carries it's own brands of some
items to allow for further sav
ings Waremart stocks generic
brands along with it’s own
labels, enabling the shopper to
save money usually spent on
packaging
Supermarkets also may
charge a bit for their atmos
phere and service Although
McKay s is quite aesthetically
pleasing and has plenty of
checkers and baggers, Ware
mart has little or nothing in the
way of decor and is simply a
large warehouse with endless
aisles of goods still in the same
containers they are shipped in

Case prices are listed with the

stock up
Waremart also cuts its cost
with a computerized check-out
system and by making the cus
tomer bag his own groceries
Safeway, with fewer checkers
and baggers, lies somewhere
between the two
The biggest price differences
occurred in the more expensive
products Waremart's two
pound loaf of Tillamook cheese
is more than a dollar less than
McKay's and 60 cents cheaper
than Safeway's Their beer and
orange juice also are consider
ably less expensive
Co-op has
good buys
Another price comparison
shows that the Grower s Market
a tood cooperative located at
454 Willamette St , has the
lowest produce prices
Item prices ranged from equal
to Safeway and Waremart to 40
percent less than the two
supermarkets Working one
hour per week at the market
drops veggie prices even more,
