    Changes sweep P.E. dept.
Physical education personnel say they like to use “emotive”
words to describe the new philosophy of self-support adopted by
the department. Students will benefit, they say, from this stricter
yet more responsive program.

Look no farther than the physical education
department to see the effects of this summer's
budget cuts
A new physical education fee, redesigned
i locker rooms, tenced-off tennis and racquetball
I courts, restricted facility access and an extensive
reservation program all go into effect this fall —
and more changes are planned
The changes are the department's response
to a $500,000 gym suit service'' cut made by the
Oregon Legislature this summer That $500,000
actually paid for a great deal more than washing
gym suits, says dean Celeste Ulrich, including
chlorine in the pools, lifeguards, security, locks,
sanitation and supervision
Although the State Board of Higher Educa
tion levied a $3 per term fee this summer to help
make up the difference, the physical education
department interprets the one-half-million-dollar
cut as a clear indication of the Legislature's
opinion of physical education support
“There's no way for $3 per term that we can
give students what we did last year," Ulrich says
She says she expects the Legislature to
totally eliminate physical education support for
1982-83, the second year of the biennium An
ticipating that, Ulrich and other physical educa
tion staff members have adopted a totally new
outlook for providing recreational services to
University students
To begin with, Ulrich says either she or
physical education head Michael Ellis "probably"
will propose the elimination of the physical
education requirement early this year at a faculty
assembly meeting
