Parking remains plentiful
By SALLY HODGKIN SON
On-campus parking is plentiful if students
don't mind paying and walking
Year-long parking permits cost $18 for
students, and although a specific parking space
isn't assigned student parking lots rarely fiH to
capacity
Richard Tanner, associate director of public
safety, says he can remember only two times
when the student parking lot across from the
Bean dorm complex has been filled during an
Elvis Presley concert at Mac Court and during the
1980 Olympic Trials
Most lots are at least three blocks away from
academic buildings Three hundred metered
spaces are closer but the ones nearest the
building (by the EMU or the Bookstore) have
two-hour meters while ones a little further away
(across from Hayward Field in front of the library)
have a five-hour limit
The fine for parking in a permit-only lot
without a permit is $5 and the fine at metered
spaces is $4 Fines if unpaid can be deducted
from a student s general deposit or a faculty or
staff member s salary
Cars rarefy are towed from campus unless
they are parked in a fire lane, m front of a fire
hydrant or m a reserved space or one marked
“handicapped only’' and the owner requests the
tow. Tanner says
“We re not m the towing business “ he says
adding that the office has a contract with a private
towing service “Our job is strictly enforcement
All the money from tickets and parking per
mits go to make the parking program sett-sup
porting The public safety department collected
more than $250,000 last year for the program.
Tanner says
The current campus parking cost is lower
than downtown parking tees and is the same as
the 1960-81 school year. Tanner says
Single-term permits are $7 50 for students
and $15 for faculty and staff members Full-year
faculty and stafl parking permits are $36
Bicycle permits are required on campus and
cost $2 Unregistered bikes will be ticketed then
impounded by campus security
Student parking permits and bicycle permits
are available in the EMU Ballroom during fall
registration and from campus security m Straub
Hall during regular office hours For more infor
