The Pioneer came to the University in 1910, modeled after an
eastern Oregon trapper that sculptor A. Phimister Proctor
happened upon at a Bums. Ore ranch The Pioneer and the
Pioneer Mother are situated so they gaze at each other across
13th Avenue When Johnson Hall was built, windows were
placed so their view was unimpaired.

The women's clinic, stafted
with a full-time nurse practi
tioner and a consulting gyn
ecologist, provides breast and
pelvic exams, pap smears and
the treatment of sexually trans
mitted diseases and other gyn
ecological problems
The clinic also distributes all
forms of birth control and
provides family planning infor
mation
The center's infirmary was
closed at the end of spring term
because of a lack of use by
University students, caused by a
shift toward heavier use of the
out-patient services offered by
the center
Jackson emphasizes that al
most all services offered by the
health center are free to any
student, and that any charges
made for tests, X-rays and
medications generally are at
least 20 percent less than else
where
“Our pharmacy has most of
the medicines that a student
needs," Jackson says
Many students mistakenly
believe that they need ASUO
health insurance to use the
health center, he says Insur
ance is quite a help for paying
for “those devastating things
that can happen,” but paying
fees is the only prerequisite for
using the center
Although the center has
walk-in service. Jackson
requests that students call
686-4441 for appointments All

p m and 8 a m to 11:30 a m
Saturday
Urgent care will be provided
during regular school terms
Monday through Saturday, 8
