State support declines
KWAX enters 31styear
By DONALD COULTER

When KWAX celebrated its
30th year on the airwaves last
spring the station s staff wasn't
sure there would be a 31st an
niversary
Budget cuts made by the
state Legislature eliminated
state funding for KWAX 91 1
FM the University s public radio
station But thanks to support
from station listeners, state
legislators granted KWAX a re
prieve and reduced the station's
operating budget by only 25
percent
Despite laying off the
equivalent of 1 '/? full-time staff
members. KWAX will continue
to broadcast classical music —
about three-quarters of the sta
tion s programming — news and
public affairs drama, folk and
jazz music KWAX also broad
casts features from the National
Public Radio Network
KWAX station manager Janet
Kenney says she was
encouraged by the support of
listeners who helped persuade
legislators to keep the station
alive
' An awful lot of people who
aren't directly related to the
University helped us out,” Ken
ney says
Pledges during the station s
spring fund-raiser came from
cable listeners on the coast and
even from a woman in Portland,
she says
"For people outside of the
University, we re their only link
It's important to them to main
tain a contact with the Universi
ty community
Though KWAX's financial
picture appears secure for the
coming school year, Kenney
says she sees problems ahead
in the future
"We have to raise more and
more ourselves (through lis
tener contributions),’ she says
"Last year it was 38 percent of
our budget — now it's 50 per
cent Next year it will be even
higher," Kenney says, adding
that the station is planning a fall
fund-raiser between Sept 30
and Oct 6
KWAX is one of only three
classical music stations in
Oregon In addition to regularly
featuring concerts from the
Eugene symphony and the
University's music school, the
station also will distribute four
taped concerts from the Oregon
Bach Festival to other NPR sta
Station manager Janet Kenney operates the controls at KWAX —
