Debate team speaks out
By ANN PORTAL
David Frank will debate just about anything
- except the ability of his speech team
Promoted this year to forensics director
Frank inherited a team ranked within the top 2
percent in the country last year
He predicts the team — which sent six or
seven members to compete in individual events
at the national tournament last year — still wil
rank within the top 10 percent this year
Frank will guide the University s speech
team through about 16 speech tournaments this
year, traveling to a variety of West Coast cities
including Sacramento. McMinnville, Los
Angeles. Portland and Bellingham, Wash
The ASUO — through incidental fees -
picks up the tab for entry tees and room and
board, opening up the program to students who
otherwise might not be able to afford it
Between 65 and 100 students will par

attempts to offer a solution, or value debating, in
which the student evaluates the types of values
and goals Americans strive to meet
National dehate topics are changed each
year. Frank says, and range from labor unions to
the effect of religious organizations on the
American political process Debaters must be
prepared to argue both sides of any problem
within the topic area, he says
The four individual events include oratory,
in which the student presents a written and
memorized 8 to 10 minute speech, and oral
interpretation, in which the student presents
selections of "high quality literature — hopeful

Extemporaneous speaking — a five or six
minute speech prepared a half hour before the
competition — and expository speaking — de
scribing something of interest to yourself and
others — round out the individual categories
Forensics is just like a sport." Frank says
"How much time you put into it is how much
you get out of it." he says
Although many high school speech
students select the University because of its
speech program. Frank says the program en
courages students with no experience
