Chemist wins fellowships
Few people ever give much
thought to the mechanical
properties of fluid flow except
perhaps to recall memories of a
blob of mercury from a broken
thermometer gliding across a
tabletop
But University chemist Robert
Mazo plans to spend all of
1981-82 on sabbatical leave in
West Germany and Israel pur
suing the study of how sub
microscopic atomic and
molecular properties of fluids
affect their behavior And he
has received a pair of fellow
ships tor his research
Mazo will begin his research
on the frictional resistance to
motion of charged particles
called ions at the Technical
University. Aachen West Ger
many A six-month fellowship
from the Heinrich Hertz Foun
dation will support his efforts
there
In March, he will move to the
Weizmann Institute of Science.
Rehovoth, Israel, where he will
hold a six-month Meyerhoff Fel
lowship from the institute
Although not directly related
to industrial applications.
Mazo s work with the physical
chemistry of fluids will help
further the theoretical under
standing of surface chemistry,
he says Investigations currently
underway in that area include
efforts by oil company
geologists to increase produc
tion by injecting water into wells
and subsequently separating
and recovering the oil
