    Radio program studies women’s issues
By QiWQEW BARMFS
WtMliMnM
"Good Evening It's another Monday, and to help
you start your week, we re here to voice the concerns of
women; this is Women's Voice."
In fact, this is Annie Hoy's voice, introducing a
weekly half-hour radio program about women - their
issues, events and music Women's Voice is aired on
KWAX every Monday night at 8 p m
According to Marcia Gukas of KWAX, the idea for
the program developed during an exchange of exper
iences and ideas between friends Hoy, of Women's
Resources and Referral, was contacted to produce the
show
Since then. Hoy and her colleague Karen Bat
chelder have voluntarily written, produced and broad
cast the show, while supervised by a professional staff
"KWAX has given us a free rein allowing women to
be almost as radical as they want," Hoy says. "We try to
include everyone in our program, however, because
KWAX has a listener profile between the ages of 21 to 45
and usually plays classical music "
Each show focuses around a central theme, such
as Women in Business. Alcoholic Problems and Women
or Women in Non-Traditional Jobs, says Hoy, who
pyrites all the scripts_
"After we choose a theme, we conduct interviews
with women relevant to that basic idea Karen chooses
the music,” she says
“I try to get something pertinent to the focus of the
particular program," says Batchelder She uses songs
that pertain to women's work, their families and "areas
of importance to women other than men ”
"We try to use music that isn't male-centered love
songs ”
Hoy says they plan to broadcast a series in the fall
on different roles women have taken in music, such as
traditional folk music, jazz and then "a show on women
in punk rock, where women have been able to emerge
as rockers ”
Gukas says the feedback on the show has been
good and that most people have expressed pleasure
that KWAX would air such as show
"We have a different kind of program here because
it develops issues in a half-hour and includes women’s
music in its theme."
Neither Batchelder, who is married and has worked
in a record store, nor Hoy, a returning art education
major and a mother of two, have any experience with
radio or producing such a show. They learned the
necessary skills from observation, Hoy says, and both
agree it isn’t easy to “talk in front of a mike and to keep
the script relaxed,” as Batchelder says.
"I’ve always had a fantasy about being on the
radio,” Hoy says. "This is kind of like living a fantasy.”
