in the country among all such
programs, joining a host of
other University departments

tional ranking in the last year

tional survey of faculty members
belonging to the Society of Park
and Recreation Educators, the
University's recreation depart

program was rated fifth among
all such programs in the

Other award-winning depart

College of Education, which is
ranked 13th among 600 educa
tion colleges in the United
States, and the doctoral pro
gram in art education, which is
rated one of the top two for the
quality of its faculty
The faculty of the Department
of Psychology is among the top
10 in the United States, Canada
and Great Britain, and the for
ensics program in the Depart
ment of Speech is among the
top two percent of all intercol
legiate programs in the nation
"We have felt for quite awhile
that our department is one of
the major leaders nationwide,"
says Larry Neal, a University
professor of recreation and park
management and a SPRE board
member, and now we have this
survey to support our beliefs "
According to the survey, the
top recreation departments
ahead of the University, in
order, are Indiana, Illinois, Penn
State. Texas A&M. Maryland.
North Carolina. Michigan State
and North Carolina State
The University has the only
accredited recreation depart
ment in the Northwest, accord
ing to Neal It also is the only
department on the West Coast
offering a doctoral degree in
recreation

Third-year law student Janie
Burcart has received the
University School of Law's
1981-82 Paul Patterson Memor
ial Fellowship, which provides a
$2,000 scholarship for the
academic year
Burcart was awarded Best
Brief" in the 1981 Advanced
Appellate Advocacy competi
tion and was a member of the
1981 state champion oral ad
vocacy team She is also a
member of the 1981 -82 National
Moot Court team
She has been selected as one
of four tutors in the 1981 -82 law
school academic support pro
gram Burcart completed her
bachelor s degree in American
studies at the University of
Sussex. England in 1969 She
earned a master's degree in
sociology from the University of
Mexico m 1971 and spent two
years in the doctoral program in
sociology at the University
