Conference examines access
In conjunction with the Inter
national Year of Disabled Per
sons. a two-day conference on
solutions to building access
problems is scheduled Friday
and Saturday at the University
The conference which is
open to the public, will offer
workshops on building access
criteria, on accessibility prob
lems of handicapped persons
and possible solutions, and de
sign alternatives The work
shops will be conducted by
numerous Eugene architects
Ray Lifchez, architecture
professor at the University of
California at Berkeley, will be
the keynote speaker at 7:30 p m
Friday in Room 107 of Lawrence
Hall Lifchez is a specialist in
architectural design and social
factors design, as well as a not
ed author and speaker on ac
cessibility
Other conference speakers
include Darrel Ackerman, dir
ector of the Independent Living
Program; Chris Casady, owner
of Total Mobility Systems and
Design, and John Hall, a social
worker at the rehabilitation unit
at Sacred Heart General Hospi
tal in Eugene

fossil remains of conodants
Now extinct, these ancient
microscopic marine animals
were among the first to con
struct calcium:fc>ased skeletons
incorporating trace minerals
from ocean water
The fossil remains of con
odants were discovered in the
late 19th century buried in
layers of ancient sedimentary
rocks
Her research is expected to
increase scientific understand
ing of’the chemistry of the an
cient oceans that covered much
of North America some 500 mil
lion years ago
Wright-Clarke graduated
from California State University
at Northridge in 1979 with a
bachelor's degree in geology
She is currently working as a
research associate with William
Holser a University geologisf,
while completing her master's
degree
