Zeffire
Hi scores with ‘Endless’
By MATT MEYER
Of th> Hnwtld
When I heard Franco Zeffirelli had made a
new movie, I was thrilled
When I discovered it starred Brooke Shields, I
was worried
But when I saw the film, I was relieved
"Endless Love," starring Shields and new
comer Martin Hewitt, is the story of a young man's
obsession with his high school sweetheart, and
the overwhelming power of their love Although it
sounds a little drippy, it jS the most sensitive
romantic film to show this year
Zeffirelli, known for "Romeo and Juliet,"
"Brother Sun, Sister Moon" and his made-for
television version of "Jesus of Nazareth," man
ages to tell his story without making it overly soft
and fuzzy, a temptation that may have taken in
other directors
Instead. Zeffirelli portrays the world not as a
lovers Disneyland where everything is perfect,
but as a realistic backdrop filled with everyday
problems Against this we see David Axelrod
(Hewitt), who is hopelessly in love with Jade
Butterfield (Shields), and this leads to battles with
the unique Butterfield family
Zeffirelli originally was hesitant to do the film,
as it reminded him too much of "Romeo and
Juliet " It is tempting to make many comparisons
between the modern lovers and Shakespeare's
Renaissance couple
Yet, Zeffirelli keeps the two stories separate
We are constantly reminded that Jade's and
David's problems result from their own inability to
cope with their love, while Romeo and Juliet were
doomed by fate
The love scenes between Jade and David are
overdone, and in trying to capture the intimacy of
two lovers on a 100-foot-wide screen, he makes
the audience embarassingly aware of themselves
instead and ruins the very mood he wants to
create
Other scenes are much better representa
tions of the master's work Scenes of a lonesome
David watching Jade from across a crowded
schoolyard are realistic representations of
David’s feelings at being separated from the one
he loves
The question in most people's minds is, of
course, whether Brooke Shields can act or not
After seeing the film, I still can't answer
She is competent She portrays her role with
relaxed confidence that makes her character
easily believable She shines as her character
breaks the bonds of childhood and becomes a
woman, while maintaining a quiet innocence
Yet something is missing Whether it's a lack
of experience or simply the confines of the role,
Shields never really lets go The film is about
passion — the uncontrollable passion of young
love Shields is fine as a teenager in love, but
always manages to keep her head above water
when she should be thrown about by the waves
The real star of the film ts Hewitt Although he
overplays his part as a dashing high school
senior, he comes across with an honesty and
drive that keeps the film alive Without him, the
film would sag into just another love story
