The posta service soon will
be instituting its new expanded
z;p code program zip plus

this means adding tour digits to
existing zip codes a move that
postal workers anticipate will
cut down on mail handling and
speed up deliveries
According to Bob Tyler from
the Eugene downtown office
businesses and post office box
holders will be notified of their
expanded zip code numbers
next week Those who receive

probably not know of their new
zip code until next February

will bemfit businesses the most
since they deal with larger
volumes of mail The nine-digit
code will speed deliveries to
them and allow for offices in
larger companies to have their
own zip code number if they
handle enough mail
Because of this the emphasis
has been placed on giving
businesses their expanded
numbers ahead of residents

for John Day trip
Reservations are being taken
for a weekend adventure in
September that will offer a look
at the history and prehistory of
the John Day Country in north
central Oregon
The guided tour, set for Sept
19-20 is sponsored by the
University s Museum of Natural
History Stops at McKenzie Pass
to see lava formations from the
Dee Wright Observatory and at
John Day Fossil Beds National
Monument are included in the
trip
The travelers will tour a llama
farm at Sisters a Chinese mu
seum at John Day and a pioneer
museum at Canyon City in ad
dition they will visit both sec
tions of John Day Fossil Beds
National Monument including a
seven-mile drive through the
Painted Hills section near Mit
chell
The tour, which is open to the
public costs $90 a person, in
cluding transportation lodging
museum admissions and two
dinners
Betore returning to Eugene
the tour will also stop at the
Herman and Eliza Oliver Histor
ical Museum to see artifacts
from the early gold mining days
of Canyon City
