History professor passes away
Kenneth Porter, an award
winning poet and University
professor emiritus of history,
died recentty at the age of 76
Porter joined the University s
history department as a full-time
professor in 1958 and retired in
1972 He earned a bachelor's
degree at Sterling College a
master s degree at the Universi
ty of Minnesota and a doctorate
at Harvard University His
academic specialty was the
social history of the American
frontier, particularly as it in
volved racial, ethnic and
religious groups
Following two years teaching
history and political science at
Southwestern College. Winfield.
Kan , he served 10 years on the
history faculty at Vassar Col
lege, Poughkeepsie N V He
filled visiting professorships at
Oregon in 1951-52. at the
University of Illinois. Urpana in
1955-58. and at Arizona State
University in 1972-73
Porter, who was a Fulbright
lecturer on American history
and institutions at Melbourne
University in Australia during
1954. also was a research as
sociate and special director of
research for the Business His
tory Foundation. Inc He
traveled extensively, visiting
such countries as Indonesia.
