The weekend ottered distractions
around the county that spanned the
cultural spectrum
At the Lane County Fairgrounds in
Eugene, bronc busters and steer
wrestlers were hard at work performing
before an enthusiastic rodeo audience
In Veneta, about 13 miles west of the
rodeo, thousands gathered in an
over-sized pasture to sell, buy, gawk
and mellow-out at the Oregon Country
Fair
The contrast in style, personality and
entertainment was the difference
between night and day
At the fairgrounds, rodeo fans
applauded the talents of horseback
riders and professional cowboys who
competed in the Emerald Empire
Round-Up
At the Fair, skilled masseurs,
face-painters and hair-braiders drew the
crowds
Cowboy boots silver and turquoise
buckles and tight Levis were
appropriate attire at the Round-Up
A quick visual survey of the Country
Fair revealed the fashion of the day to
be as little as possible Bare brown
skin accented worn peasant skirts
faded jeans and macrame bikini tops
While rodeo fans chewed barbecued
chicken and washed it down with soft
drinks and beer, fair-goers chose
between tempura brown rice and fruit
smoothies For the non-vegetarians,
chicken was available as well
Booths hawking everything from
geothermal energy information to nudist
colony memberships lined the Fair's
walkways
Cowboy hats were the hottest item for
sale at the rodeo with Western art and
lewelry running a close second
In the end, cowboys roped cows, rode
horses and did what cowboys enjoy
doing Hippies played music, gave
massages and had their own brand of
fun — and a splendid time was had by
all
