The sweat crept up the entire sleeve of Andrew
Paige’s tight white shirt as the woman testified
about the night two years ago when Paige al
legedly tried to rape her
Sometimes speaking softly, sometimes indig
nantly at cross-examination questions, the
20-year-old woman should have been the one to
sweat. She — not Paige — was the one on trial
“Don't fool yourself,” prosecuting attorney
Darryl Larson cautioned the jury “The victim is
always on trial on in sex case But what can she
hope to gain by dragging herself through the mud
again? Notoriety? Huh, some notoriety "
The “alleged victim," a former University
student, had little to gain from the trial Her
parents sat through her testimony Although the
media identified her only as “the woman,” her
name was mentioned constantly in the courtroom
filled with spectators and journalists
And the man who she said terrified her July 21,
I979, watched her testify And sweated
Co-defense attorney Milton Grimes, a family
friend of Paige's from Orange County, Calif.,
apologized constantly to the jury during his clos
ing remarks: Sorry about waving my hands Sorry
about saying "I think . ." Sorry about taking up
too much of your time
But Grimes did not apologize for his cool and
well-worded attempt to smear the character of the
woman
"I'm not old-fashioned," said Grimes, who was
wearing large tinted glasses and a tight-fitting,
three-piece suit, "but I think that it's a little forward
for a young woman who meets a young man at a
party, to go into his bedroom and smoke a
joint with him I think it's hard to believe she didn't
want more
"She did nothing but encourage this young
man "
Grimes, who often called the victim a "young
lady' and a "little girl," said the entire case was
the woman's imagination "This lady is looking for
sympathy "
He went on: The woman was trying to get a
tomer boyfriend’s attention The woman was high
on cocaine — known in some circles as an aph
rodisiac. The woman lied The woman was willing
And the woman was playing hard to get when
she suggested the couple leave the bedroom and
go dance, Grimes said
"Every red-blooded male knows that's a proper
interpretation of her actions "
’ Are we talking about some sleazy woman who
is trying to have sex with Andrew Paige,
quarterback?" Larson asked the |ury "Can you
believe that7"
As the closing arguments were phoned into the
Portland United Press International office, the
male UPI staff member asked the Eugene corre
spondent, "Can you believe this bullshit?"
It took jury members less than 90 minutes to
deliberate No sweat They believed it

Perchance?
It is evident that the reason for
lack of response to my two
previous "sexist" letters is that
women's liberation people lack
basic language communication
skill
This is evidenced in their at
tempt to exchange the suffix
man for person on words they
consider sexist Their first prob
lem is that they seem to have
missed the most sexist of all this
genre — wo man This word is
blatantly sexist, not only in it
self by even by its etymology In
the world’s most popular book,
(Genesis 2:23) Adam said
she shall be called Woman
because she was taken out of
Man ”
To reflect her newfound sta
tus of existing for herself she
should no longer be called
Woman She should be called
Wo-wo (A wo-wo is a yo-yo that
didn't quite make it She just
dangles and spins )
The second problem is that
person itself carries a male bias
in that it ends in son To remedy
this, I suggest that we use some
neutral ending to reflect the fact
that one’s gender is determined
by random chance The ideal
word would be per-chance
Then instead of using sexist
words like mail man congress
man mailperson, congressper
son we wttuld say such things
as "Has the mail-per-chance
come yet?' Or "Did our con
gress-per-chance do any good
today7"
If I receive no response to this
third ' sexist' letter of mine. I will
revise my statement about the
women's liberation
movement" being in left field I
would then say it has struck out
How about it Casey7

If it were my intention to re

have had to write a voluminous

on what you pretend to depict
about the growing opposition to
the Islamic Republic of Iran

pressive regime which came to
power under false pretenses
and promises of bringing
democracy and freedom to Iran
after 30 dark years of the shah's
dictatorship Today, after only
2V? years of Islamic Republic
rulership. the world has wit
nessed the existence of the
same Kangaroo Courts which,
in the shah's era, sent thou
sands of freedom fighters to the
firing squads the same prisons
filled with savagely tortured
political prisioners and a severe
censorship of the media cou
pled with the publication of dis
torted facts and poisionous lies,
similar to what you have pre

The dimensions of these

atrocities has grown to such an
extent that even Bam Sadr (pre
sident-elect by 75 percent
popular vote) has had to con
tess to the existence of torture
and suppression in Iran and as
a consequence himself falling a
victim to the repression of the
Islamic parties More offensive
and frightening than all this is
that these brutalities have been
committed under the guise of
Islam arid thus justified as
religious duties
In short, the crimes that have
been committed by this regime
are equal to none other than
those committed by the shah —
yes the shah — if not worse
A point of interest to many of
us is that, during the shah's
reign of terror, it was customary
to conceal one's identity by as
suming an alias in order to pro
tect one's family from the shah's
vengefulness What if I may ask
is your excuse for doing that
Mr ' All Shariati?"
I challenge you Mr What

debate in order to expose to the
people what is really going on in
your young and innocent Is

Martyr stand
The martyrdom of the 74
Muslim leaders in Iran on June
AH shocked and grieved not only
the Muslim nation in Iran, but
the entire Muslim Unmah of 1
billion Muslims all over the
world We, the Muslim Students'
Association at the University,
loin our brothers and sisters ail
over the world in congratulating
the martyrs and their families tor
the blessing and victory of
gaining martyrdom, in condem
ing the coward terrorist
hypocrites and their imperialist
and Zionist masters responsible
for the murderous act, and in
reaffirming our total and un
compromising stand behind the
international Islamic revolution
under the leadership of Imam
Khumaini
The coward act is nothing but
another step in the long vicious
cycle of conspirancies against
Islam and the Islamic revolution
This cycle which started long
before the victory of the Islamic
revolution in Iran and included
the assassination of Muslim
scholars espionage against the
Islamic movements, the crea
tion of regional and tribal des
cent the orchestration of sec
tarianism and nationalism and
the undertaking of direct mill
tary attacks, will not end by this
murderous act but will continue
as long as there are enemies of
humanity on this earth
However, in this critical per
iod of the history of our struggle
against Western and Eastern
imperialism Zionism and all
forms of tyranny and exploita
tion, we assure mankind, both
friends and foes, that the
determination of the Islamic
revolution will never be wea
keried no matter how vicious the
atrocities of the enemies are,
nor how big our sacrifice is
