Law school hosts seminar
Lawyers and judges from
around the country are a’ me
Umvers'ty s School of La* *o' a
month-long seminar on ega
solutions to racta conflict
The seminars 13
participants under the direction
of la* school dean Demcv Be1
a'e surveying and assessing the
histone ai development of sa* in
response to racia discrimina
tion in the United States They
are also searching for new *ega
approaches to solving tradition
al racial problems
A I98f Nationa Endowment
for the Humanities Summer
Semmar for Lawyers and
Judges the program began
June 15 and concludes Priday
While many solutions to racial
conflicts have been tried Be!
said it is especially important to
evaluate tong-standing
remed*es such as busing and
integration rather than accept
ing them as the onty possible or
appropriate solutions
In attacking racial problems,
the important thing is that we
are not fixated on one scheme
or another says Bell a nation
ally known specialist on civil
rights and desegregation law
The goal of the seminar is to
propose and evaluate a variety
of possible legal solutions to the
problem of racism in America
and encourage an openness in
searching for remedies in the
future
Bel! says lawyers who prac
tice in the civil rights field are
often unable to examine long
accepted solutions to racial
problems and formulate new
ones because of the long hours
their profession demands
And yet he says, persons
with contemporary litigation ex
perience can and should play
an important role
Bell has sought to give
members of the legal profession
an opportunity to actively till
that role through his four-week
seminar
Among the seminar s
members are Judge Bush Mit
chell from the Municipal Court
of Dayton. Ohio who as a black
judge says he is acutely aware
of the black community s lack of
confidence in the American
court system and Robert Lauf
man a lawyer with a private
practice in Cincinnati Ohio
who specializes in civil rights
cases
